I've used that lacquer a great deal over the years. I've had really good luck with it. Question 1: did it check/crack all over or in just one portion of the guitar? I used the lacquer on the neck. I am still working on the body. I used black lacquer, then put clear lacquer over that. 3 coats each.Question 2: How cold did it get? It got below freezing for two nights. I left the guitar out in the shop those nights. I'll try and get some pictures of it. The whole back of the neck cracked. It's pretty cool to look at. Yep, I got lazy and didn't take the guitar in house. I had this happen once before in AZ when the temps dropped below freezing in one night. But I do think that this product has changed over the years. Seems to me, it was better when I first started making guitars than it is now. We all know how chemistry in products have changed over the years. I have like 4 or 5 cans of this stuff. Trying to decide what to use it on. If I can get a good day to work on this project, I may lacquer the body and let it sit in the cold to see if it too will crack to match the neck. I think it would be a cool effect if I can get the body to do the same. I will see... Thanks John One more question: What brand of black lacquer did you use on the neck? Was it also nitro? Thanks John

One more question: What brand of black lacquer did you use on the neck? Was it also nitro? I'll have to check. But I think it was the same brand as the clear. I need to try and get some pictures. But it's been so cold the last few days. So soon as I can get out to the shop, I'll see what brand of black I used. But I am pretty sure it was the same brand as the clear. I try and use the same brands to keep from stuff not working together. Thanks John

Here you go. And I did use Minwax black lacquer under the clear. The night it did this, it got down to 12 degrees. Was that cold for two to three days. This lacquer has been on the guitar for a long time now.

Looks good to me. Are the neck and the body joined together? Getting the body to check by itself is one thing but if they are together it won't go into a freezer. Plus the neck might check even more and that may not be desirable.
But the checking on the neck looks amazing!

The other problem is I don't have any more of the Minwax black lacquer. I have not seen any of it for sale in the stores. I'll check it again when I go to the big city.
If I had a big upright freezer, I think the guitar would fit. But all I have is a small top load freezer. I could stick the body in the freezer with the neck hanging out, then cover the opening with something to keep the cold in. I don't think it would take too long for it to crack. If I was to heat up the body and then put it in the freezer, I think it would work.
I know there are other ways of achieving this effect. But would it be the same? Hum... Time to do some experimenting...
