The old covering up the decal trick... LOL! I use to aggravate over that too. I now let it go. There are ways to do that. You have to sand and build. I use to paint stuff on cars that required me to bury it with clear and make it smooth. It's not all that easy and it is time consuming.
In painting cars I use the 3 X factor. Spry it 3 times then sand and spry 3 times more. When I use to do head stock decals I would use my 3x thing. I could get it smooth but what a lot of time and effort to get a decal to look flat. I don't worry about it anymore. I put them on top or just spray a thin coat of clear on it and leave it at that. I found that most people wont say anything about the decal.
Almost time to get this build color sanded. It is looking pretty good so far. So, glad I got the clear on when I did. It is now back to being humid and raining again. Can hardly wait to get this done!

Well time to chow down on my own words. I nipped upstairs to take a look, and in fact I did "lose" the "F3nd3r" decal outline. It's on my Danny Gatton tribute / homage Tele. I saved a few good images of his signature on eBay listings of the Danny Gatton Tele. A friend at work clipped it out for me in Photoshop, but for me it wasn't accurate enough. So, I did it again for myself and made a much better job. You can see her in that "Show Your Guitars" thread we had a few years back (or whatever it was entitled.) I had my boss's secretary /PA laser print it for me to ensure there would be no inkjet runs (even from misted lacquer) and that's the decal where you can see the cut-out profile. Maybe my decal paper was thicker than the F3nd3r one? If nothing else I proved that you can laser print onto inkjet decal sheets successfully.
I wrangled for ages about the white background on the screen image(s) until someone told me that white is invisible in a "print" and so it turned out to be- it's just like Danny signed it for me. Unfortunately it's far less trivial to play like he did.
Although I have no control on what folks do once I'm gone, there is no way would I ever pass her off as genuine; the "Frost Gold" colour's wrong, she doesn't have first fret position markers, having a separate maple fretboard she doesn't have a "skunk" stripe nor a headstock truss rod infill, and she has a crown wheel side adjuster for the truss rod, but she DOES have first generation Joe Barden pickups (which is more than Fender can say about their five grand offerings!) and most importantly- she plays just great and I love her. Not puffin' on my own trumpet here but it's true to say that I made a really good job of that signature decal. I have an A4 decal sheet printed with dozens of unused slightly different sized examples of that signature if'n anyone wants one.
Somewhere!
Well I guess it's about a Tele and decals, so nearly qualifies for this thread Eddie.

About burying decals in lacquer, I start with, after the initial sealing coats, light coats over the decal. So you don't use a lot of lacquer. Then a real light sand back and a few more coats a little heavier. Here's the deal, if you spray a heavy coat it sinks and the edge of the decal will telegraph back to the top. Still after enough coats you can level sand and buff or recoat with satin.

I posted this in the wrong thread. So I reposted it here. this is the guitar that failed.
Well, I don't know how to say this but I am calling this build a fail. After letting the clear dry for a few days, it's not looking all that well.
whole lot of flaws are in the finish that I did not see before putting on the clear. Of course all of the flaws are on the top. the back of the guitar looks fine. At this moment I don't have it in me to sand off the finish and start all over again. This build has given me problems since I started it.
So, I think I am going to save the parts for another build later on. Live and learn. This is the first in a long time I have given up on a build. But I can't put it together. It's not anywhere close to my standards and I don't want my name on it. I may at a later date get it out and sand it down and redo the finish. But not now.
Sorry all! That is the way things go sometimes.

OK, to try and get this topic back on this post...
Going to let this build sit once again. Do to so many flaws in the epoxy and lacquer, it's the best thing to do for this build for now.
The thing I learned in using cloth for the top is... I should have done it the way I was going to in the beginning. I could have done a build up of clear and I would have been fine. But, I got talked into doing the resin/epoxy.
I will at some point remove the cloth, resin/epoxy and so on and start all over. But the next time I will do it the way I use to do it when I would fabric on dash boards in cars. Never had any issues with that. But the next time I do this I will only be putting the cloth on the front. I will paint the back black. The neck and head stock looks really good. So I am going to try and leave it as is.
I also might take the edge back to being squared up so that I can do binding on it. Yes it will make the body smaller, but it will still have the same look. We will see once I get there. Like always everything is subject to change.

Now that the Eagle Blues guitar is making music and I need something else to do. I think I am going to get this one out of the closet and start working on it again.
The last thing I did to this was trying to get the epoxy to look good. I sanded it then put on some lacquer and the sanding marks came through like a sore thumb. So, I am going to try and resand it to see if I can get the marks out. If not, then I might try and remove every thing and start all over with the cloth.
I'm not ready to give up on this yet. I have all the parts for this build. I will make it sound off one way or another!

After looking this over, I might be better starting over with it. From the move, it somehow got a long indention on the front. Hum... So I might peel off the fabric and redo the whole thing. I'll know more once I really get into it again. I hate to scrap this project.
Not only that, but I don't know if I want to try and fill the spot. Don't know if it will hide all that well once a clear coat goes on. Going to do some thinking on this.

Alright... I think I am coming up with a plane to get this guitar back under way. I think I'll sand it some, then put another covering of fabric over what is there. I may primer it, then attach some more fabric over it. I think that would be better than trying to peel off what is there.
Going to get back on this real soon. I can do a lot of the work indoors. It will give me something to do. LOL!
We may get a little break in the weather. If that happens, I'll be doing some finish work on the glitter guitar.

I think primer is a good idea just to block any designs coming thru.
I plan on doing a test with some fabric to see if the solarez clear is thick enough to seal fabric with. and then if it's compatible with the 2k clear I use.

Yep, I too am testing something out before I do anything else on this build. One test, I will go back to the Poly rub on and see how long it will take to build it up.

The other day, I got my hand sander out. I was going to start back on this build. I went to put on some sand paper and seen that the pad on the sander had worn out. So I ordered some parts for it. Now once again I am waiting on the parts. I ordered the parts on the 16th. Once again they have given me a tracking number and once again the post office says they have not received it.
WOW!!! What IS GOING ON? I have gotten real frustrated over ordering anything on the net! I might go out and buy me another one. So tired of this stuff!
Yes, I know it was Thanksgiving weekend, but come on, man! LOL! The parts this time are factory direct. Not Amazon or eBay.
If I could, I would stop all buying online.
So once again, this will have to wait until I can get me a sander up and going.

Work force is not what it once was. I very rarely have an issue with deliveries. Maybe your local post office or the other guys are dropping the ball.

I bought a costly item from a US seller intended as a Christmas present for "She who must be obeyed" about a week ago now. The tracking (Fedex) has not changed at all from the initial notification of intent to despatch with an associated tracking number. Fedex are waiting for it. It wouldn't be so bad except that the seller charged at least 50% more for it than broadly speaking extremely similar items from other sellers, and had the bare faced temerity to claim it was reduced by some 65% too. I don't want to tell you how much this seller gouged me for delivery. It's a rubbish service.
But wait- a timely note to self to count blessings, because in the greater scheme of things, there are far worse things and a great many folk struggling more than we are.

Been doing some thinking on this build. As soon as I can get the Sparkle/glitter guitar and the P90 guitar done, I'll be back on this build. I would like to get it done. It's been in my way long enough. Time to get back on it.
So, I have not given up on this guitar. There has been so many things that have kept me from it. I plan on starting it back up next month. So not too much longer. LOL! EB
