Alright, I took this build out to shop to experiment on. It, too, has been sitting around too long. If my experiment goes bad, then I think I'll end up painting it white and call it done.
I sanded the heck out of this. Redid the black burst on the body.
Here is the back.
Going to let this set for a couple of days. Then I'll color sand to my liking.
After that, I'll start clear coating it.
I hope it turns out good! Tire of seeing this guitar sitting around unfinished.

Should be just fine after some clear and hours of sanding. Happy trails!

I equate sanding to polishing. I'd be as useless with the former as I am with the latter! I applaud those folks who shine at this art (pun intended!)

Well, I have start to think this build is a fail. I left in it the shop the other night when we had a hard freeze. All the finish on it has cracked. I guess I could leave it that way. But I don't like the look. Once it started to warm back up in the spring I am going to one more time strip this build, primer it with some shellac white primer and start all over again. Who knows, maybe someday it will be a player.

It's not the build that is a fail- it's the finish. It's still an inspired build. Just ol' beelzebub pulling your war wound. As others have noted, many folks prize that look (myself included I confess) but if it doesn't float your boat I totally understand. No point in having an intention and settling for something else if you're a driven person. Me- I wouldn't be able to wait until the spring, I'd whack some strings on and then address it next year if you still decide that you deffo cannot live with it. Life's too short in my view.

I am not going to decide what I'll do at this time. But many have gotten me to rethink this build. It's been a long while since I've done a relic. I may let the cracks stay on this. But now I am thinking of make it with even more cracking. LOL!

Thanks for that. I went back and saw the Minwax lacquer several pages back. This is a great thread.
Did you use the Polycrylic under the lacquer? I know several builders who do this. One in particular said the Polycrylic is very similar to Fullerplast sealer that Fender used starting back in the 60s.

I have had one other build I did years ago, I had the same thing happen. I used the same brand of lacquer on it as well.
All I did to get the checking/cracking was leave in the extreme cold overnight. I know there are other ways of getting that effect. Years ago, I saw a video where a guy put the guitar in his freezer. LOL!
My son likes the effect, as well, So I may keep it the way that it's doing. I'll see how things go.

I've used that lacquer a great deal over the years. I've had really good luck with it.
Question 1: did it check/crack all over or in just one portion of the guitar?
Question 2: How cold did it get?
Thanks John

I've used that lacquer a great deal over the years. I've had really good luck with it. Question 1: did it check/crack all over or in just one portion of the guitar? I used the lacquer on the neck. I am still working on the body. I used black lacquer, then put clear lacquer over that. 3 coats each.Question 2: How cold did it get? It got below freezing for two nights. I left the guitar out in the shop those nights. I'll try and get some pictures of it. The whole back of the neck cracked. It's pretty cool to look at. Yep, I got lazy and didn't take the guitar in house. I had this happen once before in AZ when the temps dropped below freezing in one night. But I do think that this product has changed over the years. Seems to me, it was better when I first started making guitars than it is now. We all know how chemistry in products have changed over the years. I have like 4 or 5 cans of this stuff. Trying to decide what to use it on. If I can get a good day to work on this project, I may lacquer the body and let it sit in the cold to see if it too will crack to match the neck. I think it would be a cool effect if I can get the body to do the same. I will see... Thanks John
