OK, I decided to start a new thread on this. Since it will be a whole new direction for this build.
Here is the start...
This is the start. I cannot for the life me remember what this wood is called. It has kind of a maple smell to it when I cut it on my table saw. The wood has one side the is smooth, but the rest is rough cut.
here it is all trued up. I cut the board in half making it jut a bit under 3" after all the work it took to get to this point. It is right at 3/4" thick. This will become the center of the neck. I still need to cut the birds eye maple that will be the sides of the neck.
This piece of wood is as hard as nails! I trued it up on my table saw. I was wanting to take this down to more like 1/2" thick But I guess it to much stress on the saw. It kept wanting to blow the breaker. So. I made super thin cuts to about what you see in the last picture. I sure miss my big table saw. But, I thin used my joiner/planer to make everything smooth and even. the wood is super nice wood and does feel like maple.
So, I got to hurting really bad so I have to quit for the day. I'll try and get the sides all cut up tomorrow. Oh, I think I have decided to cut the other body in half and reuse the top wing on this build and cut me out a new lower wing. Doing that will save me a step or two... Hum...
If I feel like tomorrow, I'll true up the other side that I cut off from this wood so that I can make two neck blanks. I was wanting to make some neck blanks anyway.

You know what I don't like about having a shop on the patio? The weather! It been raining again. So, I really can't work on anything until it clears up.
Oh well, gives me time in the music room. LOL! EB

Still not a lot going on as far as this build goes. Been busy doing the Santa thing. I have only 2 more places to go. One on Sat and the other one will be on Tuesday. I have to say it sure has been a lot of fun doing Santa. I wish I could do it all year round. LOL!
Little kids and the adult kids have really blessed me! I wish I could put into words about all the super cool people I have met. I have gotten to talk with people from all walks of life. Santa is common ground for a lot of people. I have to say that there is something special that happens when people see Santa. Both in the people and in me.
It's to bad that more people can't play Santa. It would change their lives.
Well, I hope to do some things to this build before Christmas. But, right now I am taking it a day at a time with no big plans. My doctor started me on a new drug that is supposed to help with my condition. I go in in few day for an MRI of my brain. They want to see how much my brain has shrank. That will tell them how big a dose of the drug I will need to slow the shrinkage down.
OK, the thing I learned is this... Everyone will get this at sometime in their life. It shows up more when we hit 60. It gets misdiagnosed a lot. My new doctor is a specialist in this. There is nothing anyone can do to stop it. In some people it starts later on in life. But it seems to happen to men faster than women. I would say if you are over 60 you need to have yourself checked out. The sooner they treat it the longer it will take it to take over your mind. The drug I have been put on is supposed to help with though and remembering things. (short term memory) Long term is not effected. supposed to help with motor skills as well.

Hey Eddie, don't how I missed this thread to this point. It just turned up in my feed when I checked this evening. And I've been checking everyday.
That wood of looks like mahogany to me but hard to say in the pic. I've used an Asian rosewood that I don't know the name of that was little redder than that board you have there. But was hard as nails and no fun to work with at all.
Hoping they get something figured out for your brain troubles. Sounds like they are going in the right direction to Gert you diagnosed properly.

I was having a lot of problems with Tech stuff a few days ago. So much so that I even wound up changing my phone number. I wound up changing carriers. I won't deal with ATT ever again. On here I sometimes have problems posting some things. But not to often.
Well, I am sick again. Must have gotten it from one of the people I took pictures with. So, I had to cancel out today and Tuesday. I feel bad for letting people down, but at the same time I don't want to pass anything on to someone else.

Can't have you with this on top of everything Brother. でつ e&oe ...I am doing my best! you would think with all of the vitamins and other drugs they have me on I would not get anything! We even eat good things for the body. I am thinking none of the stuff works. It's been 2 1/2 years since I was sick. I got COVID and got over it now I'm sick again. Once I am over this think I'll lock myself in the condo and not come out! LOL!
I don't think I have flu, but one never knows these days what you may have or not have.
Been in bed all day. See how I am doing tomorrow. If not any better by Monday, I guess it's back to the doctor again. EB

OK went and got tested today. I don't have any COVID, no flu, and no strep throat. I have a cold with a sore throat. So glad I went and got tested. This doctor gave me a bunch of stuff to take that will help kick it out of me.
One of the most fun doctors I have seen in a long while.
Well, I should be better in a day or two.
Thanks! EB

we are all ready doing much better today. The drugs kicked in fast. I think it's because we went in sooner this time. I just wish I didn't have to cancel out on my last tow jigs of being Santa. Oh, well, maybe next year. Going to keep the beard growing out and do some trimming of it throughout next year.
Well, I hope you all are well, and plan on having a lot of fun with Family and friends.
Been cold here again. Yesterday was in the 70s today low 60s. that's cold for us. LOL! Tonight will be on the low low 40s and supposed to drop even more as the week goes on. We, will see.

Well, alright! I am sick of being sick. LOL! So, it was a nice day out and I decided to get some work done on this build. I think I may have over done it today, but oh well.
I'll post a few pictures later on tonight. But I got the one body wing (upper) cut off of the bad lower wing. I also got the new wood for the lower wing cut off the board I am going to use. That crack in the mahogany was all over the place. I didn't know if I would be able to use the mahogany for the lower wing or not. But I had just enough of it to make the wing. I also got the boards cut for the neck through. I did a lot of thinking on it today. I was going to save the birds eye maple for other builds. But, I decided to go ahead and cut it up for the neck through. I like to start off with a 42" long boards. That is more than enough for a neck through. I also had to make up my mind on how thick I wanted the wood to be. If I was going to cut the maple up for this build, then I wanted to use as much of it as I could for the neck.
So, I wound up with 3 pieces that are 42 long 2 3/8th thick and one inch wide for each board. I then wound up working on cutting two thin slices of the that more red looking wood that I cannot remember the name of. I'll have to look it up.
I wound up cutting most of the wood today on my table saw. Boy, I can sure see the difference between a good table saw and one of these portable kind. This saw is OK for construction kind of work, but not when it comes to cutting wood for jobs like making guitars. Again, I sure do miss my good tools I once had. OH well!
I know I said I would post picture later. But, I now have 2.
here are the two body wings. I cut the upper wing right down the middle. I left it that way for now. Once the neck has been glued up and then cut to size, I will then determine how wide to leave the wing. the lower wing I will wait on cutting the shape out until the neck blank is done.
here is the neck blank wood so far. I still need to thickness the red strips. One is done but I need to thin the one on the right side some more. I just didn't have enough in me to finish it today. Maybe I can work on it again tomorrow. The other smaller piece of red wood will be for bindings.
What I did on the small red strips was I cut them close to thickness on the table saw. Not fun! Table saw kept popping the beaker on the extension cord. that got to be a frustrating thing! Grrrr! What I did to help on thickness of the strips was I made a temp fence on my oscillating sander to make it into a thickness sander. Worked out pretty good. It take a long time to do it that way. But, I almost got it all done. I think another pass or two on that one and it will be good to go.
On the neck blank, I think I am going to try and put a pin at each end in the wood at glue up. Hoping it will help keep the wood from sliding around. In the past I would glue it up and try and clamp it down flat, only to have it move during the night. So I am thinking of use a wood dowel (small one) at each end of the blank. I should be able to cut that part off once the neck had dried.
I sure would like to get the neck glued up sometime tomorrow. If I do, I will let it set in clamps for a while. Then un clamp it, and let the blank rest for a few weeks before I start cutting the profile and all that. This is going to be a lot of glue up, and I would like the neck to cure for a while before using it.
All in all it was a good day. I had some things that didn't go the way I was wanting them to. But, I am trying to do the best with what I have. Sometimes you have to say go for it and do it. My tools I use are not fast nor are they top on of the line stuff. But, they have made me slow way down and enjoy being out side. Something I now do during a build, is, If I start to get upset or frustrated with the way things are going I stop, and look around and really take in what is around me. I find my self calm down and I can deal with things better. The advantage of having a shop on the patio. LOL! I can hear the birds and see life going on around me. I still laugh at people when they walk by and they have that look on their faces... "What's he doing? What's he building? " LOL!!!
You all have a great Christmas! EB
