OK, I went to finish putting this project together. Wouldn't you know it... I went to put on the tuners and found out the clear on the neck (back) had cracked all the way down the neck! Don't know why, and it's been drying now for almost a month. The body didn't do that just the neck.
So I sanded off all the clear and have started putting tung oil on it. So it will be some time before I get it the rest of the way together. So far the tung oil seems to be working.
I am so frustrated with paint and clear. If this keeps going on, I'm going to start going with no finish. I'll sand to a 4000 grit paper and put a coat of beeswax and call it a day.

Did you ever do more testing on the printers ink?

The thing with the printer ink is me getting it. I can have my wife to get the press man to mix it for me.
But at last test It worked out grate! It goes on like stain, and goes on more even. But it does need to be sealed once on the wood. At my last testing I used lacquer and poly and both did well. Hummm... thanks for reminding me... I will try that on a future project.

I always wonder if anyone ever thinks.... Hey what ever happened to that build...
Well It's been a long time since I posted anything on this build. So here we go.
Well nothing went right on this build from the get go. So after some hard thinking I decided to put it away and someday maybe I would get it out and try again with it.
So for the last two days I have been working on it.
1; I had to pull the frets and re-sand the fret board. For some reason the fret board had gotten a big hump in it where the heal is. So I took out the frets and sanded and put in the new frets. 2; the clear I used on it (Poly) wont stick. After all this time it peels right off. So I stripped the guitar of it' hardware and everything else to get it ready to go back down to bare wood.
3; along the way I will be making some changes to the guitar. Like changing the back color and redoing the peg head a little.
So I am now in the proses of taking the finish off. As soon as I can I'll start to post some pictures of it.

So I got most of the clear peeled off. Now It will be onto the sanding off the rest down to the wood... It's a long proses but worth it in the end. I don't like to use strippers. Had too many things go wrong using strippers. I know some have had good luck with them, but not me. LOL!
Pictures soon to come.

So what did use for a sealer if anything and what kind of poly. Just don't want to reread the whole thread.

I used the same Poly brand I used on the Guitar attack guitar. But I think the formula has changed. When spraying it looks more like water now. May be the same brand but not the stuff coming out of it. One guitar I sealed and the other one I didn't. But both of the the builds, This one and the walnut tele has done the same thing. So my plan on these two is to strip them down, and go with my favorite tung oil.
I thinking on the walnut-t I am only going maybe 3 coats to keep it more on the dull side of things. and this one I'll apply a bunch of coats to give it more of the glossy look.
I have had more problems with finish work here in AZ than I ever had in FL. But I use spray cans. So you get what you get. so I'll be buying a new can of tung oil this weekend. It will take about a week to week and half to get the body's were I want them, as far as the finish goes. But that's fine. I'm in no big hurry.
Thanks for the questions. I don't mind repeating if some are too lazy to read. HA! Just messing with ya!

I think Behlens changed their lacquer it seems to harden much faster then I remember fro a few years ago. So scraping binding was a real pain on the Les Paul. Kinda why I went oil on the Pauduk guitar. Never had it peel except for one that I sealed shellac that wasn't 100%. That was a hard lesson.

Well, the way things are going, I may not use spray cans any more. Something has changed in them all.
But the thing is I was watching this show on TV were they sanded down some wood floors and the put a high gloss finish on them and they were dry in a few days. They buffed the floors out and on TV looked like glass, and they were ready to all the furniture back in.
why can't we find a product like that? they never said what they used. But could I use a floor clear on a guitar body? If it's good enough for floor traffic, it should hold up on a guitar...right?

That's got to be water bourn. It's dries very fast and yes it is really hard. Wears well too. But like all water bourn products it has a learning curve, not that we haven't been through about a million learning curves building guitars.

Do you think it would work for guitars?
I did see this other product... It's two part clear. It cost around 30 dollars. But it look like a resin too me. It too dries fast, and I know there would be a big learning curve on it. But I would hate to waste it. Oh will... I may pick up some that flooring stuff just to try it out on some scrap to see how it works. But it will have to wait until I get to feeling better. If that will ever happen. Had an MRI this past week now waiting on the other doctor to give me an appointment so I can find out what the heck the MRI shows...

Waiting on results is a drag. I feel ya bro.
Any finish that's new to the user will of course have a learning curve but some are more intuitive or user friendly. I didn't find anything remotely user friendly about water bourn floor finish. Another note about floor finish is, what looks good from six feet, or standing up may not look so great from a few inches.
