In the interest of spurring some healthy debate on this board, I have a question for everybody:
What is your favorite guitar that retails for under $500?
(regular street price, no sales or pawns)
Xaviere? Reverend? Cort? Squier? Axl? Something else?
What do you like about it? What needs to be improved?
I must admit, I have ulterior motives for starting this thread: I am shifting the focus in my home recording setup from electronic music to hard rock\metal and I need some well made, yet inexpensive new guitars.
Yes, I'm looking for a few ideas, so if you have any leads, please tell me about them.
Hands on experience with the guitars is preferred, but I am also interested in anything you've heard about as well.
Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you all.

I once owned a Lotus Les Paul copy. Nice guitar, but I had to file one of the saddles due to a burr that caused excessive string breakage.
A friend of mine had a Squier superstrat back in the late 1980s, which I played several times. It was an SSH configuration, which was pretty typical for metal back in the day. Decent guitar, as I recall, but it was some annoying late 80s color like neon pink or something....

Epiphone SG 400 and Les Paul guitars are excellent, prices are quite reasonable.
Fender Squire Tele and Strat are also excellent, though they can usually benefit from a good setup.
Godin have some really nice guitars under $500.
I've heard good things about Jay Turser as well
Hope this helps

Just re-read your question. My favorite guitar under $500 has to be the Epiphone G-400 faded SG. The ones I've played felt every bit as good as the Gibson SG Special.

Those new Xaviere's look pretty sweet. The components look like quality especially at under $200. I like the looks of those thinline teles they've got on the GFS website now.

A few years ago my wife got me this Aslin Dane 'Sting Ray' copy bass at MusicGoRound for $200.00 brand new. What surprised me most about this bass was was the pickup, great big fat mags that have enough punch to knock the hair off a running dog . The tuners were 2 on a side but all I had to do was roll the top one over and bingo, a Dane Ray. While I normally avoid basses with wide, fat necks due to nearly tearing my left thumb off in a factory accident over 20 years ago, I had to have this one. I do get some serious fatigue and pain if I play it for an hour or more, but it just gives me an excuse to switch instruments...

My Mex Tele Nashville Deluxe was 450.00 and I have no complaints past all the pick ups sounding the same. So the middle got a sd stacked hb and I did a neck on mod with a push pull tone pot. A great guitar right from factory. nice paint good fret work. dane

This is me, last year, holding my birthday gifts from my wife (I turned 50)... On the left is an SX bass. On the right, a Douglas w/Floyd Rose. The pair cost me $300 (shipping included) from Rondo Music. The bass plays well, but the pickups are a bit microphonic... The Douglas is perfect! Absolutely the best $150 guitar I've ever played.

Nice guitars indeed... But dang dude... You're 50+?? I looked older at 35!! .... Thanks! I owe it all to the "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle".... Actually, the picture does not reveal that most of my hair is gray... On the other hand, at least I have hair!!!

I am a big Peavey fan. My Raptor is still a great guitar.
Has anyone tried the Laguna guitars from GuitarCenter?
John
