I think Steve might be onto something about saw size. If all things remained as usual, same saws same fret wire then the saws may be so dull that they didn't cut the slot wide enough. Or if you sourced the wire from someone you don't normally use it could be a wider tang. Me personally, unless I plan to CA my frets in place I would not shorten the tangs. I bought a cute little slot cleaning saw which just also happens to be a pain to use. But it gets the job done.I decided to titebond glue the last frets I installed in the Route 66 neck. That worked out ok. Although I am not a no fret slot space kind of whacko. There are plenty Holy Grail LPs out there with no glue in the slots and they seem to have worked out OK. Same for old Fender and everybody else back in the day. No glue in slots. I have always "spot welded" the fret ends with CA just as a precaution. I seriously doubt that Yami got special sized frets installed. I have seen and have do on bound boards a filing technique that champers the fret ends back into the binding a bit which puts the end of the fret slightly inside the binding line. I did just see a video yesterday of an older couple that have been building guitars together for 40 years in Japan. And they did use precut to fit frets. So maybe it's not uncommon in Japan. Just spit balling here. On the saws. They are supposed to be the same thickness as the fret tang. I get all my frets from Stew Mac. I don't think that both saws would have been dull. I did try them both and both did the same thing once they got into the wood.
Once I get some more done on this build, I am going to make a maple fret board. I will see for sure if it's the saws or not. I still think it's the ebony. The bottom of the tang went into the slots. It was tang itself that didn't want to go in.
As far as gluing in the frets. I have a lot of guitars, and all of my cigar box guitars do not have the frets glued in. Hey, you know what??? I didn't have any issues with putting in the frets on my last build. The Eagle Blues leather top guitar. Hum... Nope, no one problem. I will feel sorry for the person that tries and remove the frets on this one. Even though they are not glued in. They will not come out without a fight! LOL! I didn't start gluing in frets until like 6 or 7 years ago. I started out using Titebond then went to CA. thin set. Will I keep on gluing in frets? Yes. I only chose not to on this build. Like I said, they are in there to stay.
So many ways of doing things. Another one would be to cut the ends off straight up and down, then put on the bindings and made nibs around the frets to hide the ends. Like Gibson does on a lot of LP custom guitars.
I have the ends pretty much done now. That will be on yet another video. I got a lot done today in a short period of time. I'll let my next video show that. That will be part 13. Trying to keep the video 20 min or less. My internet uploads take a 2 to 3 hours depending on how long they are.
Well, I do have other guitars with these frets and I used my saw to make the slots. So again, I really have a hard time thinking it was the saws. So I am going to claim no fault on my part or on the saws.

OK... Did me some looking around online about fret saw sharpness. Seems they need to be sharpened bout ever 50 builds. The one saw I have has way over that amount. From what I found out, even new out the box should be sharpened as well.
So I do have the file to do this. I may wait until after this build is done to sharpen the saws. I just don't understand how it was fine on the last build. But in one of many videos on the subject, I did see where that a dull blade makes the slot fatter, not skinnier. The guy even showed in the video. But it was that video that convinced me to maybe sharpen the saws. So, I'll do a video of all this once I get to it.
On the build... I have gotten everything marked out. Now I am trying to decide if I want to go with an angle neck or keep it flat. If I keep it flat, I will have to recess the bridge into the body to make the LP bridge work.
Don't even ask, I already tried to find another bridge. One like I used on the Eagle Guitar. Not to be found. They make a Start trim, Bass, and cigar box guitar, bridges in the bronze. But no hard tales. Not even a Tele one. I did find one Tele one, but it was for the single coil pickup T stile.
I decided to try and make my own knobs. I just started them this afternoon. They are being glued up as I write this. More on them later on.

Like I said Eddie, I was just spit balling ideas out there. I think I would burn that ebony if there is any left.

I remember reading years ago that you can specifically select fret tangs a little over size with a view to correcting neck bow a little, hence why I wondered out aloud about the saw blade size and whether its relationship to the fret tangs was in any way significant in this case. On balance though, I reckon Eddie has it nailed with it being down to the hardness of the wood. Also, the inherent oily nature of the ebony would probably lead to clogging as already noted, and that would translate to perceived extra effort?

Something else to think about in frets. I cannot remember the manufacture, but they use a fret wire with no tang at all. They epoxy the frets on. So you really don't need a tang on a fret. But again, seems like some extra care would have to happen to keep them inline. I know they put a groove in to set the fret in, but still...
As far as burning the ebony? Here is what I was thinking. I might put it in the oven and bake it, to see if I can dry it out or get rid of some of the oils that are in it. I think what is happening is that there are a lot of oils in it that not only plug up the saw but lets the wood swell up while cutting. On some of the slot I cut, I would cut until it started to drag. Then I would let it sit for a while and go back to it, and it seemed it would cut better.
Well, any way... In a lot of ways, I am glad to be doing the videos. I may not do everything the way others do, but I think that is OK. But at least the videos have bought up some interesting subjects.
Hold on to your seats... This build is not over yet. I am sure there will be more to come into play soon. LOL!

The Parker Fly had epoxied on frets because it had a CF neck. And there were some indents where the frets went to help locate them.

I have to take a break from the build. I had a bad attack last night. Not feeling good at all today. My brain and body not getting along. So I don't know when I'll get back to the build. I hope in the next day or two.

I am doing my best to hold on. But when I have a real bad night like last night, it gets real hard to do so.
