I'd give up! This is why I've always shied away from building radio control model airplanes- all that work and care only to be followed by the inevitable crash. Reminds me of when I put some ferrules into the back of a pre-finished 'Tele' body. I was loaned this ultra high class German manufactured spot face cutter and used a pillar drill but they all just chipped. Eddie, if anyone can turn this around you can.

The hole must have been to small. Try pulling the bushings maybe the the crack will close. Then you can CA it and ream the hole out.

You can do it! That is the true show of skill- recovering from an "oh, snap!"

Thanks guys! Yes I'm going to try and pull the bushings out today. It only cracked on the one side. That is why I thought the wood may have had a bad spot in it. I even use some bees wax on them to make them go in better. I know stuff happens but man why on this build? Oh will, as most of you know I don't give up that easy.

OK after a few try's I think I got it fixed... On the left side as you are looking at it, is were the crack is. This one shot I took after I started to fix it. Here is another picture. You can see were the crack is, in this one a little better. I kept on playing with the hardware to see how it looked as I was fixing it. LOL! Her she is all done. Not too bad... I don't think anyone will even see it, if I don't tell where it's at! So don't tell anyone... HA! Took this picture to show that the frets are in. OK here is how I wound up fixing the crack. I did try and take the mounts out, but they would not budge. So I had no choice but to leave it in. So I first took some CA glue and let it leach into the crack. I let it sit over night. The next day (today) I sanded down the CA glue, but the glue made the crack to where you could see it even more. So after thing about it, I came up with a little trick. I took a razor blade and cut a channel over the crack. I then took some paint that was close to the maple as possible, I then mix the paint with CA glue and filled in the crack. If you use this trick please know you have to work fast. Once the CA glue and the paint mix, the CA will dry really fast. So once it was all dry, I took a razor blade and scraped until flush with the top. Once the string are on The fix will be really hard to see. It really up set me when this happened, but I did learn how to fix it. LOL! So now I can get to the back of the guitar and finish routing for the covers. I did make templates for that, but I didn't get any pictures as of yet. The Pickup are the John's custom pickups he made for me for this build. I had the cream rings, and I think that is what I am going to use. I was going to make some custom wood ones, and I might later on down the road. I do plan on keeping this guitar. It is kind of my proto type LP neck through. Not only that I am making it from me. I sanded the and carved the neck the way I wanted a neck for a long time. Yes it is not carved like you think. I did some tweaks to it that I have been thinking of for a long time, I hope it works out. If you are like me you really don't know exactly how a neck will feel until the string are on. Well, that is it for now. EB

I'm thinking not a big deal. Good cover up. And I agree it's impossible to feel the neck without strings.

OK here are the back covers all done. Tools I used. This is my table top belt sander. I used this to get the covers down to the thickness I wanted. What I do is I keep them a little proud of the body then I sand them down to the body. The router. I used the small router bit first, and templates I used to make the routs for the covers. I used the bigger bit to make the inside of the control cavity a little bit bigger. My pots I ordered are full size and needed some more room to fit. This is my orbital sander I use. I used this to sand the cover down to the body. Here are the rest of the part I needed to finish this project. they all came in today. So I might later on tonight, get the tuner holes drilled. Once I have that, then it's onto a lot of finish sanding, and then I'll start putting on the tung oil. After that It's putting her all together and making her sing! EB

More stuff... here are the templates I made for the routing of the covers. I used covers off an other build to get the shapes for the covers. After I cut out the shapes I then used them to make the templates. Once again I used carpet tape to hold the templates in place. I draw a line on the body from the templates so I know where to place the templates. Thought while I had the drill bit in the drill press, that I would go ahead and make me a template to hold the pots, to make it easier when it comes time to solder. Before I start drilling, I measure out where the tuners will go. From the outside edge I measure 1/2" toward the center. I Then measured 1 1/4" inch down from that mark. for the next tuner and so on.Once I get the measurements, I then drill a small hole where the tuners will go. I then change out the drill bit for the one that fits the tuners. I then drill only 1/2 way through. I then flip the guitar over and drill the other 1/2. This keep you from tearing out on the back side of the peg head. I use a drill press for this, but you can use a hand drill. That is what I used when I first started out. here is the back side with the holes drilled. See that dark spot... that is in the wood. It goes all the though to the top of the peg head. Maple at times has hidden things like this in it. I see it as a birth mark. HA! Here are the tuners I ended up with. The black knobs on these are not plastic, they are ebony. For the price I got them for I was surprised. The front. I think the tuners are going to look right at home on this build. OK I am really hurting after working on this today. So I may not do anything for a day or two. Now the finish sanding starts. I hope to start the Tung oil by next week. I can hardly wait to get this put together. I hope she plays and sound as good as she is looking. EB

thanks! Yes the tung oil will make it look cool!
I did do some finish sanding on her today. I may if I can get the sanding done. Start on the tung oil. Since I'm going for semigloss finish, it won't take too long of a time putting on the tung oil. Nice thing about Maple and cherry there is no grain fill to do. If I can start the tung oil today, I should be able by Sunday to do the color sanding and a lite buffing and start putting her together. Well, that is my goal, anyway.

Today so far... I got her all color sanded. Leveled the frets. Put on the tuners, and now I am starting to wire things up. I had to quit because of my neck. So I had to come in for while. Later on tonight I'll try and get some done.
John sent me a wire diagram with the pickups. His diagram shows to make the push pulls for volume. But I'm going to make the push pulls for tone, with the coil spitting. John I may have some questions later on about the the wire code of the pickups.
So far everything is going well on the soldering. I am taking pictures and will post them later on, once the wiring is all done.
I didn't know I that I ran out of screws to screw the pickups onto the body. So I'll be taking them off an other build for now. Don't want to wait an other week for screws... Hey what's up with hardware stores? You know they don't sell #2 screws anymore? At least around here. So now I have to buy them on line. What the heck is up with that?
On eBay they want 22 dollars for 100 of them. Seems a little steep to me. Anyone know where I can get them for less?

Ok... after color sanding and getting a really cool satin look, I went on to leveling the frets. Here is how I go about doing that. I use a flat file, re-crown file, and a black magic marker. I use the marker and I mark the tops of the frets. I also check to see how flat the neck is. Once I get the neck flat, I then use the marker. I take the file and move it up and down the frets. I don't use a lot of pressure. I am looking for high frets. It doesn't take long to find them. Once I get the fret level using the file, I then use the marker again, and mark the tops of the frets. This time the black marker is going to be used as a guide line. I then start using the re-crown file. I file until the black line gets really thin. You don't want to file the top of the frets. Once the re-crowning is done, I use this sponge with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper to get the marks off of the fret from the files. I use Scratch X to polish out the frets. I also use 0000 steal wool with the scratch X. Make the frets come out really smooth. The head stock with my new Logo, and my truss rod cover. Here is something I do during a build. I don't through away any wood until the build is done. I had some small pieces of cut off that came in handy for making the truss rod cover. The peg head with the tuners in. Here I am getting ready to start the wiring. Please note the tone Caps... I use some insulation off some wire. I cut off what I need and pull the wire out. Then I use that cover for the wire on the caps. Hey if you are like me and need wire, here is what I use. I also work on computers. So I have a lot of wire from computers. That is what I use on my guitars. Hey, it's free form me, and it works out great for me. OK... I am not going to brag on a build again... I said this were going well. Well not so... See this push pull? (Next picture) Look close... Yep the threaded part of the pot came off the base. So Now I have to order another pus pot. So she won't be a player this weekend. well, this is were I stopped today. If I get some time tomorrow I'll finish up some more of the wiring, while I wait on the other pot. Would like to get the other pickup mounted, and string her up. Well, that's it for now. EB

Thanks Dane!
I did get all the wires run and the pickups are mounted. Now I am waiting on the new push pull pots. I went ahead this time and bought some upper scale ones. In hopes they won't come apart on me. The ones I did try and use I got off of eBay in like 20 to pack from China. I got them a long time ago and the two I had left where the ones I was going to use for this build. OH Well... Never had a problem with them until this build.
So until I get the pots in this build is on hold until then. I was going to string her up. But I thought I'll wait.

Looks like my new pots won't be here until Wednesday or Thursday... So I went ahead and put the strings on her. I made some truss rod and bridge adjustments to her, and played her for a little while. Not too bad. I had 2 frets that were still wanting to buzz a little but not too much. So I'm going to leave her with the strings tuned up for a few days or until I get the parts. Once I get her playing through an amp, I'll make some other adjustments to her then. I still need to do a little nut filing too, to bring the string down at the nut. Again not a lot just a little. I was surprised at how close I got the nut this time. Guess I got lucky on this build, on the nut anyways.
Ok I left out some info on how to do some things on this build. I did that to see if anyone would ask me about it. But so far no one has said a thing. Ha! So this is a test.... do you know what I did not show you all so far?
