I've got a Randy Rhoads Flying V copy with some autographs on it that I want to preserve. Autographs were signed with a Sharpie permanent marker. Any ideas for a clearcoat I might use?
Thanks

This is a common question, and the answer is always "it depends". Sharpie ink is pretty tough, but I can't assure that a spray on finish won't dissolve it.
My only recommendation is to practice on scrap. If you absolutely have to top coat the autographs, get some various clear sprays (DupliColor acrylic from Autozone, MinWax nitro from Home Depot, Krylon clear topcoat, etc...), draw on a piece of finished wood (scrap) with a Sharpie, and topcoat the ink. I would think you should lightly spray the first coats like topcoating a decal.
Try this at your own risk. I prefer to leave an autographed guitar hanging on the wall or sitting on a stand.
Good luck, John
