I had just finished all of the prep work before clear coating my saga les paul. I took several weeks of hard work but it was finally done and so I put the guitar body up on a hook with a coat hanger and started shooting it down with duplicolor clear. about two minutes into it, the hook ripped out of the ceiling and the guitar body came crashing to the floor, obliterating a section of the binding. Now, a bunch of super glue, some creative dremel work and a ton of sanding later I was able to camouflage the blemish to where it's not very noticeable (just two small cracks in the outer binding). I have just stripped the mottled up clear coat back off of the guitar and basically had to restain the whole thing. Mostly just touch up work except where the guitar hit the ground. On a positive note, I've finished the head stock decal which is drying with a coat of clear right now. It came out much better than I'd anticipated, but not perfect. However after two prior botched attempts and several more coats of black paint I'm not about to mess with it and I'm going to leave well enough alone. I've decided to modify my plan of attack. The body and neck will now be sprayed down one face at a time on a sturdy level surface, which should serendipitously prevent and sags or runs in the clear coat.
