As a cheap alternative to TransTint and other dyes, food coloring will work as a dye. I apprenticed for a guy who swore by the yellow McCormick's food coloring available at the grocery store. He used it on his high end guitars.
He would make a water solution with the food coloring and rub it into the wood. He would spray clear over it.
The advantage to TransTint is that you can use it in lacquer and water, rub or spray it, and a little goes a long way. I also believe that it will be more colorfast over the life of the guitar.
Use it at your own risk -- we are interested in hearing about how it works out.
