hey John,
The finish won't be an issue because the repair will be covered by the neck plate.
The wood is swamp ash. How difficult (or easy) will it be to drill, plug and re-drill those holes?
Thanks, John Carroll

John -- If you can hide the repair with the neck plate, you are lucky!
Plugging holes is actually pretty easy. You can probably find a dowel at Lowe's that fits in the existing holes. Use Titebond to glue the dowel into the hole and a flushcut saw to trim the excess.
When drilling the neck holes, take it slow -- drill, check, drill, check -- with the drill press. It is amazing how the drill bits can wander in a body! The key is initial line-up of the bit. Consider a laser with the drill press (an alignment tool sold at Sears, other hardware places) to make sure the bit is going where you want it.
The process is not hard, but the consequences of failure are pretty high. If you don't feel comfortable with it, consider taking the body to a pro wood worker or luthier.
Good luck, John
