I'll admit RG was my hero and a major influence on my playing. I relic'd my Columbus S-type to look like his '61 at least a decade before that was even "a thing". I watched the auctions live. The iconic battered '61 Stratocaster went for £700,000 not including Bonham's rake off and taxes. www.bonhams.com/press_release/38960/It seems that the new owner has donated it to a museum in Ireland. That's great because I would have been dismayed to see Joe B. squirrel it away like Kirk Hammett did with "Greenie". Hopefully the museum will allow occasional outings in order that it gets to sing instead of just having soup thrown at it? Art galleries lend priceless paintings for others to enjoy so why not? It was something of a "Trigger's Broom" though. I note that the rusty Dallas Rangemaster went for £10,000? I have one of those. They went for stupid money 15 years or so ago. I should have moved it on at the time. His backup '58 Strat went for £100,000. His AC30 sold for £20,000 and it didn't even have Celestion "Blue Bulldogs" in it, although that strikes me as a far more astute purchase than the Rangemaster? His National Triolian went under the hammer for £75,000- not bad for a 5k guitar without Rory's DNA in all the crevices! Having been to "Experience Hendrix" at the end of the monorail in Seattle back when I was commuting to Renton for work (treasured memories) I'm tempted to go over to Ireland and gaze covetously at the battered '61! Rory went nearly three decades ago, but all the old ones are shuffling off now. Sigh.

The soup line is very funny Steve. That "and seeing Joe B. squirrel it away. Got a good chuckle out of me.
Amazing how much these icon guitars go for. Thinking also about Clapton and Gilmore. Gibson was charging 10,000 $ for the Jimmy Page sig guitar. And the 10 he signed personally went for 100,000. hard to imagine from a humble shop keeper like me.
I read something about Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick selling off some of his immense herd. No idea of what he's done about it or what they went for.

Steve - thanks for posting that. Very interesting.
I’m with you - not sure I wanted anyone to hide those guitars and artifacts away.
