All - I just got my JCM900 SLX back from the shop and it is working properly again. Learned something from my amp guy and wanted to share it. The problem: I am playing into my amp at a low volume, and instantly it goes to full 11 and scares me to death! No warning, just full Richie Blackmore loud! I was convinced it was a tube or bad pot. The solution: these amps have an effects loop, and the input (the return) had a dirty switch in the plug. It was warming up and allowing the amp to go full tilt even without a plug in it. Amp guy said to put a little contact cleaner on a jack and clean them regularly. Lesson learned! John

Good tip John because it would have given me a knee-jerk panic response!
I have a valve / tube amp combo that is switchable between 15 and 30 watts. It has an effects loop, but it's configured with a stereo socket. During a telephone call whilst I was ordering some bespoke cables, the designer told me that effects loops on tube amps are at best a compromise, but he didn't elaborate upon why that should be and I didn't think to query it. That was Stewart Ward of Session Amps (now called Award Session). He was responsible for the Sessionette 75 watts combo which was used by many top "names". Even EC used a Session amp on 461 Ocean Boulevard (citation on the Award Session website in the history section).
This was prompted by your reference to the effects loop in a Marshall tube amp John.

Good to know John, I'm guessing this is a possibility on any tube amp with an effects loop? So I have two that should be cleaned before I use them again.
Thank you my friend!

Yep! Good advice! I have been doing this on all my plug in's. LOL! It's always good to have good clean connections. I like to clean my cable ends A lot! Plus, it helps to spray come cleaner on your cable ends to help keep the connection clean.
There was someone that posted not too long ago on FB about static coming though on the amp. Turned out to be a dirty connection. I told him to spray come contact cleaner on the cable and push the cable in and out a few time. Problem fixed.
Thanks for the post and the reminder! EB

It’s funny - I’m pretty good about cleaning input and speaker jacks. I completely missed the other jacks on the back of the amp.
Eddie - is there a specific brand of contact cleaner that you use?

John When I go out to the shop, I'll look and see what it is. It works superb! I have used it on so many things. But it is a good practice to clean all connections.

We use SuperServisol switch cleaner. "De-Oxit" should work as a product available across The Pond.

Also, you can buy these fibreglass cleaning "pens" that work like a propelling pencil in paintbrush form. They are great for cleaning tight corners like you find in connectors and for removing battery leakage corrosion. They only cost a couple of bucks but pay a little more and get one with maybe ten spare replacement fibreglass brush inserts.
The benefits outweigh any drawbacks, but try to avoid inhaling and keep the resultant dust off your fingers!

Here is what I have been using for a while now. Seems to work fine. No issues at all.

I'm going to see if I can find a local source for them. John
