I had heard of boiling bass strings years and years ago. Maybe from the 70's. Didn't make since to me then nor now. The old string on this bass were dead. I bet they were dead when boiled. LOL! People do some odd things for sure. I put this as one of them things that make you go... Hum.... EB
I say "Hum" more and more as I age. LOL! Same here!

I say hum a great deal, too!
Concerning boiling strings, I tried it a few times years ago. I read that Eddie Van Halen boiled his strings with a little baking soda. Apparently it stripped the manufacturer oils/byproducts and pre-stretched the strings. Note: These were new strings he boiled. I met a guy at a music store who said boiling extended the life span of his strings to a near indefinite level. I can neither confirm or deny this.
I do tell customers that I will not do a setup without installing new strings. It is about impossible to get the intonation right on old strings, and, as Steve noted, flat spots and dings on the winds create setup problems.
Fresh strings do make a difference, and I think it is worth the investment to support your art!
My opinion only, John

I can't print the things I say barely concealed under my breath, certainly not on a "family" forum, but I can say it's not "hum"!
Although that is supposed to demonstrate a lack of vocabulary, I put it down to intolerance caused by advancing years and the knowledge that fewer and fewer are left with the resultant impatience!
The silver lining is that I only get that way with intransigent inanimate objects, not generally with human beings.
でつ e&oe ...

Is hiding a lot of what I an really thinking. It kind of like the saying here in the south (USA) "Bless his/their little hearts" If you hear someone say that around here, it's not a nice thing. LOL!
