Well, I just have to vent on the GGBO 2021.
I liked the Idea of the build off. But there are to many guitars that fell through the cracks. Many of them didn't even get a mention. Some of the one that were chosen, should not have been, in my opinion.
Some of the guitars this year are only works of art. Not really playable. And yet some of them made it through. And what it up with a Lego builds? Seen those before. There is a guy on You Tube that builds them.
There is also a guy that builds guitars out of glass. He didn't even get a mention of his work.
Well, to me I was really disappointed in the outcome. In the kit builds, I would not have chosen the one that won. To many others that should have been there. I don't know why there are so many being picked because of how Odd they look. I mean really, how many of the guitars that were picked as the top 10 would or could you play on a stage? Only a few would be road worthy.
I know they are now saying that "it really wasn't about the builds. But about the community of guitar builders" Oh really? If they have another one of these so called "community" build offs. Then I think they need to do some restructure of the web site and how people can vote. A lot of people didn't even know how to vote. They need a big button that says vote here! LOL! I think the also need to separate first time builder from the other experienced builders. I was also wondering how or why, if you had a neck that someone bought, and they made the body, why is the a kit guitar? There were a few that made a body from scratch.
I know it wasn't much money to join the contest. But was it worth the effort? In hope of getting more people to join your channel? For getting to know more people that build guitars? They had over 400 people join the contest. I can't help how many of them will still be around next year. I do know that some people did drop out this contest. One guy said he had taken on more than he could deal with. (first time builder)
I did enjoy some of the builds. That part of it was great to see. I have my favorites, but they are not like some of the ones that made the top 10 list.

You are right about the voting button, but I guess that excludes attention span deficit surfers. It goes further than that though, in several aborted attempts I haven't managed to view any more than those visible on the landing page, and I could only see Dane's exposition page by doing a search for his name or Jonah Custom Guitars I forget which now. I havd no idea how well Dane did in the competition. It definitely needs an overhaul.

I found on most of the links for YT I had to search for a lot of the videos that I was interested in from the web site.
I don't know how many videos I watched, but it was a lot. I really like watching the people that know their stuff. Something about watching people that know their craft. But some of the builders made me wonder... What the heck are doing?! Some, did not need to be around power tools.
I did watch a few that built guitars without any power tools. 2 of them that I liked did a great job with only hand tools. That should be a thing of it's own. Builds without power tools. LOL!
Like I said, I really enjoyed a lot of the builds. To bad more of them did not even get a mention.

This is one of my favorite builds. I know for some it may not be their cut of tea. But there is a lot that went into this build. I wish I could own it. LOL!

Indeed. If you're going to go "off piste" then that's the way to do it.

In response to wondering how I did in the GGBO2021. I don't know what my final vote count was because the GGBO website cleared the totals from their page at the dead line. Last time I checked I had 130 votes. Which is abysmal in my opinion. I did see folks with 5 or 15 I mean really low counts. And that wasn't any reflection on the builds just on their ability to network. In the end only 195 people completed their guitars. Not sure how it went on the kit side.
Speaking of kits, As far as I could ascertain from the the contest rules. Most folks felt like making the neck was the bench mark of a scratch build. In other words any idiot can cut a body out of a slab of wood but the real skill is in figuring out a neck.
If I had really thought about the main contest being about making entertaining videos and social media I would have passed. Or I could have taken the Ben Crowe approach and cut it into pieces and then screw or buckle it all back together some how.
I think my biggest disappointment in the current trend of "custom" guitar building is filling everything with resin. River tables became river table like guitars, then just chop whatever crap you have laying around and dump it all in a guitar like shaped mold and pour freaking resin all over it!

Lot of that going on. Some are cool, but you are right there is a lot of this, "lets make it into a guitar" out of anything and everything. I think we all know by now it is possible to put a pickup and a string or two and call it a guitar (of some kind) and it will sound off. LOL!
I think a lot of people got in over their heads. Lots of mistakes were made by builders. Well, lets see if they have another one next year. If they do I hope they make some changes. EB

I suspect the talented contributors will question the time, effort and expense divided by the overall perceived benefit and give it the swerve if'n there is a next time. That means if it has any legs left at all, then the standards will likely slide over time into a morass of resin, Lego, pencils and re-purposed coffee tables. For me it should be about more than just click bait.
As I previously stated, I never did see all the finished guitars, unless it was necessary to view all the YouTube videos to achieve that which wasn't going to happen here. I DO know that what I saw Dane make was top drawer, and completely changed my thoughts compared to when he started off with the concept. That's the mark of true talent.

The folks at Crimson are already talking about next year and the fact that some things need to change and you know the regular stuff. They said all that same stuff last year but in the end it's a video and social media contest. Last years winner was a cow shaped guitar that the masses are still raving about. That should have been enough warning for me to stay clear but I'm a slow learner.
this is an edit,
funny after I wrote the above comment I went to YT and in the suggested videos was Ben Crowe seeing Violet the COW GUITAR for the first time. I don't think I can watch it. But I'm kind of drawn you know like a freak show.
