I have an unusual problem with. my squire strat. the "G and B" strings do not work! I've put a meter across the pick ups and get constant readings an have no continuity problems electrically or earth buzz. the "E,A,D and e" strings all work fine Any Ideas?
PLEASE HELP. goo

Can you post some pictures? I have never had a guitar with this problem. But, I would first check the input jack. As far as earth buzz goes. If the jack has come loose sometimes it can spin around and cause a short. That is where I would start first off.
Is the G and B dead on all pickups?

I have never heard of this either, but if the pickup is OK electrically as you say, then the only reason I can think of is that the affected magnet pole pieces have become partially or even totally de-magnetised for some reason, although as Eddie queried, if it affects all pickups that is indeed extremely unlikely. If you bring a ferrous pointed object towards the two pole pieces under the affected strings, is it attracted or can you tell a difference between those and the others that are working? You may just be able to bend a string far enough over to engage with the pole piece next go it to see whether it starts to cough up some noise too.

There is no earth buzz and yes all three pick ups are dead on those strings . Could it be anything to do with the green pillow shaped(capacitor/resistor ?!?) thingy?

Yes but bending was to be a test not a way of life. Will the pickup, pickup if the string is bent over the next magnet? One other thing you should try be fore you pull the pups put is anew set of strings. Yeah that dosen't make sense but stranger things have happened.

I have seen and heard of a lot of things but this one has me. Maybe John would have some idea as to what might be going on. He makes pickups. I don't see how a tone cap could be causing this. It has to be something else, like bad pickups, but what's the odds on getting 3 bad ones? Hum... You didn't get any steal wool cough in the pickups? I'm guess now.
Would be cool to figure this out. Did you test the pickup with a meter? So strange. EB

This is a real puzzle. My feeling is that there may be a misconfigured tone pot capacitor finding itself rather in the arrangement of a Varitone, with the pickup itself constituting the Varitone inductor, but an explanation is beyond the scope of this thread. Disconnect one leg of the tone pot capacitor(s) and see what happens.
Testing for continuity of pickups is only feasible if you can be sure that the pickup under scrutiny is disconnected from the rest of the guitar's circuit wiring.

After reading all you inputs I decided to change out the two strings, which were new ,and try them on my other working guitar and f**k me they didn’t work there either. So I put the swapped pair from my Yamaha to the squire and all is working fine now. What a strange thing ? Turns out the two strings were to blame!, no idea how this could and did happen. I’ll put this down to alien intervention Thanks guys 🤘

You could email them and tell them the problem you had. More than likely they will at least send out out some new strings for free. Thanks for letting us know. EB
