Dead at age 75. One of my earliest guitar heroes. His tone in the studio and live Mountain performances haunted me for years. We used to pre-amp our cheap tube amps trying to sound like Leslie West's preamped Sunn amps! His use of the mixolydian scale put me on the path to break out of the pentatonic box. So sad to lose these rock pioneers.

youtu.be/ULgoFaIos00Says it all I think. West Bruce and Laing didn't really grab me but that Mountain song did in Spades pumped up by those Les Paul Junior tones. He dwarfed that LPJ. Nantucket Sleighride was used as the theme tune to an investigatory type of TV programme over here in the 1970s, presented by one Brian Walden. It was decades before I learned what it was about! Everyone at School was into Mountain. Cheers Leslie. Rest in Peace fella. e&oe ...

Sorry to hear this, I liked their music it's a big part of the classic southern fried rock sound. My dad died at 75 and I sure you that's way to young.

That sure is too young Dane as I can aver, my Pa went at 67 and my Ma at 38. Some things just suck big style. Kind of shapes your life and moulds your general outlook, you can't help it. It also explains my total lack of any faith whatsoever.
I really don't think I could go on a Nantucket Sleighride!

Steve, very sorry to hear that. Your Ma was very young and that's very hard to deal with. Your Pa too. I'm not going to try and lay any trite platitudes on you, you are right, the stuff we go through shapes us.

Thanks Dane, that's appreciated but I'm far from being unique? It's history now and it is what it is Dane. It's kind of an odd feeling when you suddenly realise that at just sixty something you find you're the oldest survivor in both parents' families, and siblings and cousins start to regard you as "the head of the family".
Onwards and upwards is the way to go though!

I remember hearing "Mississippi Queen" the first time - a clinic in guitar swagger in two minutes and thirty seconds. They just don't make them like him anymore. I asked my 20-something barber this morning -- who are the guitar heroes and innovators now? ROCK ON, Leslie John

Syl was an interesting guy; had a chance to meet him and talk several times. Another great one gone. John
