OK, I just got back form Guitar Center. My friends and I ppcked up this nice looking EPI LP custom. It has an Ivory top with a black back and sides. One of my friends says to me... Hey Ed look at the Grover tunes on this guitar... I looked at them and they looked like counterfeit or fake Grover tuners. Each one is branded with the Grover name, but, Each of the tuners the name Grover did not look the same.
We then looked at USA Gibson and the Grover tuners were a lot different than what was on the EPI.
Is EPI installing fake Grover's? Or do they make a lower line of Grover tuners for the EPIs?
Hum...

Don't know. Do you mean that all the tuners on the Epi look the same but different from other Grover tuners you've seen? Or that the ones on the Epi don't even match each other?
Either way wouldn't be a big surprise if Grover made a lower end tuner for cheaper guitars.

I haven't looked at a recent Epi. The last ones I remember taking an interest in were the Korea-made ones.
I think there are several different versions of Grovers that are made to kind of look alike. The story I heard that the Epi Grovers are "licensed", ie made in China. I just think this cheapens the brand, and they should at least give an indication that they are not Made in the USA tuners. If you look at them side-by-side with USA Grovers the differences are pretty apparent.
There are tons of fakes on eBay...not sure how to tell them apart without doing an A/B...or avoiding them.
I buy my Grovers from Stewmac. I know they are a little more expensive than eBay, but I feel confident they are authentic.

We looked at a USA made Gibson that have Grovers on it. There was a big difference between the two.
Dane, on the guitar we looking each tuner was different from each other as far as the Grover name is on them. NO two were the same. This is why we thought they were fakes.
John, I had a guy that I knew in AZ that worked for Grover. He did show me some ways to tell the fake from the real. One way is the way the Name Grover is on the tuner. The other one is in the body of tuner were the gears are. It's in the shape of the housing. Once he showed me that, I have been able to spot the fakes pretty fast. But I didn't know that EPI or China made Grovers for the EPIs. So that explains a lot.
thanks so much for the info!

OK here is another on for ya! Same day at the GC;
One of the guy's I was with likes SGs. He has been looking for the right one for some time. We all see this SG Gibson. It's looked like (from a distance) to come right out of the 70s. But it was a new guitar.
My friend pickup it up and asked me to hold the guitar. It was super lite. He asked me if I could tell what kind of wood it's made of. Well, after looking at it closer it did look like mahogany but I counted 8 pieces of it at about 2" wide strips. This is a USA made Gibson with a $1500 price tag. What?
I still don't know if it was mahogany (the body) because it looked so much different from the neck.
So is mahogany getting that hard to get the Gibson is making guitar body's (USA) out of so many pieces of wood? The guitar played OK and sound alright but to me not worth the $1500 price tag.
