Back in 2016 I filled in a dozen or so gigs with a band that uses in ear monitors. My regular band uses four floor monitors which I always hated - never loud enough, bulky, too many cables across the stage, etc. Middle of the road IEM systems go for $900+. I was tasked with finding a serviceable used system. I came across some new, made in China, hardware (TAKSTAR)that looked interesting. The transmitter and two receivers was $100 delivered (FOB). I found a youtube review that knocked the included earbuds but not the hardware. We took a flier on the $100 and fell in head first. Extra receivers were $38 so we piled on after our trial run. Our first gig with them an outdoor event which is always a challenge to hear across the stage. The equipment was a huge success. I can finally hear EVERYTHING like never before. highly recommended.

I have tried to use the ear monitors. I just didn't like them. The last time I used them (at least the ones that I was made to use) were controlled by the sound tech. He never could get a good balance in the sound, for what ever reason he would turn the keyboard up and bury the rest, just like he would when they had floor monitors. It was frustrating. But I don't even like using head sets.
I am glad this works for you. Guess they would be OK if each person can control their own ear monitors. I also see where more and more are getting rid of the guitar amps as well. I was just at a place were no one had an amp on stage. But for me the electric guitars sounded like rubber-bands, you know really thin sounding like so many digital sounds for guitar. But I guess out with old and in with the new. EB

My band uses the Behringer IEMs. We have 16 channel mixers on stage for each band member so we can adjust our own monitor mix. Which is great because anytime the sound guy has to adjust your mix it can be messed up. It would be like anyone on stage trying to mix the house. Totally fixes the "MORE OF ME IN THE MONITORS SYNDROME". We use M6-pro ear buds which are very decent for the price. About 50$, but they are single driver unit and have their limitations. I miss my app on stage but I don't miss everybody telling me to turn it down. And my guitar sounds good in the mains so I'm happy with that. Best thing is our vocals really tightened up with IEMs.

I've used IEMs, too. One thing I found with them is that you do get what you pay for. Also, it always seemed like the drummers hate them though!
I had a colleague who toured as a guitar tech with the opening act for a major female country star. The bands on the tour all used direct amps (mostly Kempers), triggered drums, and IEMs. He said when they did a sound check all you could hear when the mains were down was unamplified vocals and guitars and the real cymbals!
He said they practiced that way from the beginning and the bands were really comfortable with the sound of the IEMs...mostly because it sounded the same every night.

I've not tried them. I reckon drummers probably don't like them because of the latency, however low it is.

I haven't experienced any type of lag in my IEMs. And my drummer nor any of the other players have any complaints about latency. I can see where that might be the case with wireless but our system is all Ethernet cable. I do have a wireless guitar bug that has a delay if I'm to far from the receiver and it drives me crazy. But since I'm hard wired to the mic and now IEMs I don't use the bug. Never did use it much.

Sorry guys- I naturally assumed that in-ear monitors would be wire free? My guitar wireless thingy does have lag / latency and I noticed it big style at first but not so much now. I reckon that would drive a drummer to distraction. I figure wireless is good assurance against electrocution? I only have a cheapo AKG or Audio Technica set up (I think it's an AKG). The only thing I couldn't come to terms with was its dreadful microphonic cable. I made a new one with Neutrik and Van Damme parts. Fixed (but you shouldn't have to do that.)
