OK, This passed week I have dealt with 2 guys for 2 different guitars. Both of them had them advertised for around 500 dollars or trade.
Hum... So both guys wound up telling me they were selling them too lite and needed for me to come up in my price in what I was offering. What? I told them both, if you are wanting more, then up the price in your adds. What the heck is wrong with people?
One of the guitars is a PRS. The guy tells me. "It's a 900 dollar guitar" So I went to eBay, found the exact one he has for sale, brand new for 750, and it comes with all kinds of stuff. Then he showed me an add form a music store where he got his from selling for 875 dollars, told me I had the wrong guitar add. Hum...
How many PRS Custom 24 SE's do they make with same everything at different prices? Seems a few guitar stores are selling these same guitar at different prices, but are indeed the same guitar. Hum...
So I had to pass on both guitars because these guys were off their nut! Told them both, "I really don't need another guitar."
I was just wanting a PRS because I had never owned one. No big deal to me.
But what is up with people that post stuff like this? Do they want to sell or not?
The other adds I see are like this... I don't accept or will return phone calls nor do I text or respond to emails.... Then how do they expect you to get hold of them? WOW!People!

Wow, that's a new one on me. Bait and switch?
Did you actually go over there and talk in person, or was it by phone?
I don't take emails on items for sale any more because I have found that people who are serious will call. Emailers are usually just trying to find the lowest price, or negotiate without ever having to put any effort into it.

Most of through emails and IM on Face Book. Think I'll go to calls only. The only thing about that is, I don't always have my phone one me. HA! Most of the time people won't leave a message. But yes the Old Bait and switch, for sure! It's kind of funny how a guitar went from $500.00 to $1000.00 dollars. Wish I could sell that way. I could make a lot of money! Now I know why their guitars stay up for sale for so long. EB

Most people won't accept logical arguments on why their item is worth less (or not worth more, if it's me!). Time is the only thing that will convince them.
I learned that when buying my first house – months after I'd made an offer lower than their asking, they came back and offered a lower price than I had offered before!

Things would be different if we were back in those days before t'interweb. It's relatively inexpensive to publicise items for sale in this day and age. If these folks had to pay as much to get their inventory noticed like you had to in those days, they'd be more serious about selling because of the implied overhead. Nowadays, folks just dangle things like a worm on a hook, mostly (in my view) because they have a lot else to sell and are only focussed on shifting so much product over a given period, not on closing any one specific deal. Bait and switch is the quid pro quo of that scenario. Even the mighty eBay can't actually force folks to send an item once an auction finishes if it realises a silly low price, they can only try to penalise the seller indirectly. At the end of the day, you have to be prepared to walk away from a deal and in that sense at least, 't'was ever thus. $0.02 of course, other scenarios are probably available etc.

I was just thinking about how I use to have to pay for an add in the News paper. I thought to myself if it would be different if people had to pay for an add. Hum... but then I remembered how even back in them days people would do the bait and switch thing. But like you side, today there is more of that because of how people can post their stuff for free. As far as eBay... I quit selling on there due to the fact it has gotten so expensive for me to sell an item and make any profit on it. Most time's I would loos money, after all the fees, and cost of shipping and boxing it up. The last guitar I sent, cost me almost $70.00 US to ship it 3 states away from me. Not counting the cost of the shipping materiel. But I do see adds on eBay where people still try and do the starting bid at .99 cents for an item that should sell for around $1000.00 US or more. Sometimes it works out, but I be willing to bet they don't always get that much for the item, and wind up loosing money on it. If they have a store on eBay they have to ship it or face loosing their store on eBay. Still does not mean they will or not ship.

My last Craigslist posting went something like this (condensed for brevity).
"Utility trailer for sale. Like new condition (see photos). Cash only, no checks."
The first call - "Hey bro...can you take a personal check?"
And it went downhill from there.

I get calls at 11pm or 7:30am.... the other one is, I use a land line for CL. I say on there Do not texted to this number because it is a land line. So I wind up getting calls that go like this... Hey I texted you but you never responded to my text" I say " did you read the add? I say in the add, please do not text because it's a land line" Then I get..."oh I must have read over that"... People! EB

I think the people I deal with are so distracted that they can't focus on anything. It is like they get about 20-30% of the conversation! John
