Hi John, do you know if they have already secured another facility? I mean there's bound to be some down time or lag in setting up a new location. I imagine they would be needing/ using much or all of the existing machines and tooling.

Dane, I just seen a video of where they are saying this may be the end of Gibson. Do to the amount of moneys that Gibson owes, Is a lot more than they can afford to even move the company. No one seems to really know the out come of Gibson. As far as I can tell, Gibson is not saying anything... EB

Dane - I read that Gibson is trying to stay in the Memphis area and that they are going to stay in their current location for up to two years. Who knows..will keep you updated. John

Thanks for the info guys. It's a real shame that the one plant that is still making quality guitars is the one that needs to move. I have a customer that worked for Gibson back during the raid. Apparently Gibson did buy "tainted" wood when others walked away from it.

No doubt the industry is undergoing serious changes. By moving its production facility, there will be questions about the quality [real or not] coming out of the new Gibson factory. How many key employees will retire or be unable to make the commute? Also, a new facility will, no doubt, include more automation and other production changes. Meanwhile Chibsons get better every year, or so I hear.
GC's credit rating was downgraded to one level above imminent default. Fender is competing [screwing] with its distributors and dealers by offering direct sales of its top of the line guitars amps and accessories.
Speaking of imports, I bought a new MIM Fender Deluxe strat from a local-ish store [George's Music has a half dozen stores in PA and FL]. The vintage noiseless pickups are to die for. A friend bought one of those $99 epi LP w/ P-90s and he loves it - after he replaced the bridge. Super light weight but the fret ends could use some work, if you ask me.

A lot can be said about the imports.I work on a lot of them. I also own some. To me they are great guitars. You don't have to have the Big Name or made in the USA to have great guitar for little money. I own a MIM Strat and Tele. I use to own a USA Strat and wound up selling it because I liked my MIM one better. I know some will disagree with me. but this is what I do. I buy/sell/trade and work on guitars for a hobby. The hobby keeps me busy. But it's given me a chance to not only work on all kinds of guitar from all the price ranges, but the hobby has shown me that most guitar today can be some awesome players. I did a rebuild of a Squire Strat a few month ago. When I got it, it was grimy looked like it had been in the mud, most of the strings where gone, had stickers and tape and marker all over it. Someone gave it to me. So I took it all apart and started cleaning her up. Before long I had her looking almost new again, I was able to reuse everything that was on the guitar. I plugged her in and BAM!!! that guitar sounded really great! The guy that gave me the guitar could not believe how good the guitar sounded and played. I did wind up flipping the guitar, and now wish I would have kept it. But the guy that wound up with it loves it! One of the best sounding Strats to date I have worked on. So you just never know what is out there, as far as guitars go. I do hope that Gibson will stay on here in the USA. But there are a lot of changes going on once again in this world. So it will be interesting to see how things go. EB

I love Gibson guitars. But I'm like most musicians operating on a starving artist budget. The import stuff has really became the working musician's gear of choice because of the affordability and the stuff is pretty good.
Currently rebuilding a 1980s Korean made Memphis LP Special copy for a guy in Illinois. Refretted with jumbo wire and retro-fitted proper p90 coils under the import dog-ear covers. This dude actually owns vintage Gibsons but wants a guitar to tour with and probably spill beer on.

I saw last week that Gibson decided to skip the annual NAMM Show going on right now in California. This may be a first in recent memory for Gibson. Here is a link to the article: www.musicradar.com/news/namm-2018-gibson-no-show-confirmedThis, to me, is kind of like Chevrolet skipping the Detroit Auto Show. John

There's been a lot of noise on youtube and on forums about Gibson not making it to NAMM. They are getting a lot of press by not going. And as they say any press it good press.

I have just read an (unsubstantiated) post on another forum that Gibson have filed for bankruptsy protection. Let's hope they can make a silk purse from a sow's ear, because it would be a great shame if some lowball industry also-ran got a hold of the rights to the name and commenced selling Chibsons with a "G".

I just seen something like that too. That is what they were saying, that there is a possibility of Gibson being bought out. Hum... EB

I read an article in Bloomberg yesterday that a group of Gibson bond holders is demanding that their CEO, Mr. J, resign as a condition of restructuring the debt. Wow
Anybody want to go in with me and buy Gibson?

They only need to raise about $500 million before the end of May to keep going.
