JB -- This is it in a nutshell...
1. The Strat normally has a 25.5" scale. To find the position of the bridge, measure from the nut to the 12th fret. Take this distance, and measure from the 12th fret toward the bridge. Where the "nut to 12th fret" distance ends is where the midpoint of the bridge should be.
2. Check out the bridge -- the distance you measured in step 1 should represent the midpoint of the saddle adjustment. Give yourself play toward and from the nut because you don't want to get into a position where you couldn't adjust out a flat or sharp string.
3. Measure/check, measure/check, measure/check...prior to drilling any holes. I recommend checking out Mel Hisc*ck's book, "Make your own guitar", availabe from Amazon. He has a good description of this process.
If you have any questions, please consult a luthier or repairer. Drilling the holes in the wrong place can render your guitar unplayable! Do so at your own risk!
Good luck, John
