Andy -- I'd try Duplicolor Olympic white. It is very close the old Fender color, and it is readily available at Autozone and Advanced Auto. My opinion, but it is the best looking white to me. As far as rewiring goes, I've used a lot of wire from eBay. The seller is a guy named "John" (not me), and the link is: stores.ebay.com/id=155009&ssPageName=STRK:MEFS:MESSTNote: He is out until 1 July...sorry about that. I like CTS pots...you can get them a number of places...even on eBay. Good luck, John

Hello again guys. I ended up buying the Strat wiring kit from Stew-mac, and finally ordered the GFS lipstick pickups too! I spent most of today swapping everything out and wiring up the new stuff (mostly). Here are a few pictures of todays progress: The primer is gray as you can see. I bought some Krylon though, the old formula and can, in the Ivory color. Here is a color of the body: I took this right before the sun went fully down, so it looks a bit darker than it is. I'll get some pics up later in the day light. I'm pretty happy with the progress!

We'll forgive you this once Andy, but don't make a habit of it!
(Excellent work BTW!)

It looks great, Andy. Make sure you tell us the exact color of that white paint because it looks great. You know...that gray primer looks pretty cool with those lipstick tubes. Kind of "rat rod" retro. John

I was going to say the same thing about that gray, but the ivory is going to look great, too! With the white guard and a rosewood fretboard, it'll be a classic look! The Stew Mac wiring kits are nice - I built a tele from all Stew Mac parts maybe 15 years ago. the wiring diagram was easy to follow, as I recall. Wish I had kept it, I've been jonesing for a telecaster recently.

Kind of "rat rod" retro. John Thanks John. After I fit the pickguard with all the new things in it, I thought the same thing! I stood back and said, "wow, that actually looks really cool with the gray......too bad I'm painting it white." Also, the paint is the Krylon (5-ball can) Ivory Indoor-Outdoor spray paint. I meant to take a picture of the cans but must have forgotten. I actually bought the Krylon "White" as well, but after I did a few test pieces of both, I decided on the Ivory. It gives it a little more of an aged look.

Also, I think I forgot to mention this, but I'm not wiring it as a regular Strat. In order to stay with the SRV "Charley" theme, I'm going for a 2 knob setup.
I'm not very affluent yet with all the wiring, so of course, I had to find a diagram that would fit the bill. The only kind of guitar I could think of with a similar wiring style was the Nashville Deluxe Telecaster. 3 pickups, 5-way switch, Master volume, Master tone. So I wired it up according to that schematic. We'll see how it ends up sounding, I did end up using the .050uf capacitor from the Strat wiring kit, where the Tele diagram called for a .022uf cap. I don't know what either of them do, but we'll find out

Ok. I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but the rosewood on this neck looked pretty ugly. It was a sickly looking light brown. So I decided to try some fretboard stain/dye from Stew Mac. Here are some pictures: It now has a nice dark look to it, and very uniform. It looks a little more like ebony now, but thats fine by me. A little ebony fretboard and ivory paint, "live together in perfect harmony...." Also, here are the two paint choices I purchased. In the end I went with the Ivory obviously, but the White looked pretty good, just a little too sterile for me:

Pretty cool...looks like ebony.
Are you going to clearcoat that ivory? Looking forward to seeing the finished guitar.

thanks John. I'm definitely going to clear the Ivory. depending on the weather today, I might let the body hang out in the sun for a while as I work on the neck. Then maybe start the clear this weekend.

I had time today, so I got working on the headstock. I'm going to paint it as well, to go with the Charley theme: As I was working on the headstock, I let the body hang out in the sun: I took the opportunity to place things together, to get a look at how it'll be finished. I have to say, I'm pretty happy with this:

As Borat would say, "Very nice..."
Great job. What a cool color combination. That ivory color really sets off that white pickguard and dark fingerboard.
Are you going to put a decal on the headstock?
Good luck, John

I'm thinking about a decal for sure. I've never done one before though, so any advice or tips would be great
