If you could show us picture that could be helpful. May be as simple as the steel strings have more tension then the tuners can handle. But there may be something binding from to much extra windings hard to know without good pics and even a brand and model of guitar could be very helpful in trouble shooting this.

antonio hermosa solid classical electric. would steel tuners replace the plastic tuners correctly? what about the wider holes already there?

Not a good idea to put steal string on a classical guitar. A lot of classical guitars do not have a truss rod in them. The tuners are more times than not go in to the head stock in an ope head stock way. I don't think they sell tuners for electric strings that go in the way that most classical guitars are made. the steal string will put a lot more pressure on the guitar and over time you will get what is called belly up and the neck and body will bow together where the neck and the body meet. Plus where the strings come through the bridge. Again most classical guitars tie in and don't use pegs. for me I don't don't think I would put Steal string on the guitar. EB

Eddie I agree with you whole heartedly if the the guitar is acoustic with a slotted peghead. However the op said it was solid body and not knowing what we were dealing with is why I asked for more info. From the looks of what I can find on that brand it is a slotted peghead and solid body may mean only solid spruce top so yes, yes to what Eddie says. Steel string not a good idea on your guitar and prolly not a steel string style tuner that will work on the existing peghead.

OH I see, he does say solid body. But I don't think I have seen a solid body classical guitar. Hum...I was thinking he meant a solid top acoustic classical guitar. Just shows how we all see things different. EB

I want to thank you guys for the great advice. i'm really glad I googled guitar repair forum and saw you. While you're here... As you can see I have been thinking about an electric guitar with only a piezo, no magnetic pick-ups. And is 1 3/4" at the nut but with the same string spacing at the bridge. I mistakenly thought the Antonio Hermosa could be tweaked. Anyways, you guys are savvy and considerate. Thanks
