Hi all! So I was pretty happy last week to finally getting around to doing the nitro clear coating on the white jazz bass I am building (yes the first one I started years ago when I first came on here! Life has a habit if running away from one all too quickly!) Anyhow, I used aerosols and ended up with some runs, and even in my garage with the breezy weather was disappointed to see I got quite a bit of dust in it too In sanding down the runs unfortunately I went a bit far and took the color off.....I don't particularly want it relic looking, so what's the best way to patch up? I was thinking spray a little colour in a pot and lightly brush on to build it up again before sanding and redo of the clear. Is tha a good approach or any other bright ideas? I'd rather not have any more redos! On the plus side the neck I posted about some time back (with cracks in the finish) has been redone with poly and has a couple of weeks to go before I can finally do the color sand and buff...that's all looking good...except the surface of my decal seemed to crack, but not too worried on that!

You can always do a spray blend. I have done that on a few guitars. I use to do blending on cars. If you use a spry can or gun, too blend with is better than brushing it on. Blending is good to hide a color if it's (in your case) white. Sometimes the white won't always match up. (any color really wont) If the white has been on the guitar for a long while, I would be willing to bet that the white you have put on has changed a little over time. Blending the paint into each other will make it to were it would be harder to see the fix.

I guess the aerosol is not that precise and I have two spots no more than 1cm long and maybe half wide. From what I can see the white has stayed really white and it's the prime coat I am seeing which in comparison looks grey. although having said that the nitro is putting a slight tint to it although it's supposed to be clear - if you hadn't seen it before the clear i don't think you'd say it wasn't quite a bright white.

A sand through is nothing but a huge pain in the butt. You could dab or brush white but you will need to level it before you recoat with lacquer. You could, and this would be my choice, give it a couple quick shots with the rattle can. Any over spray will be buried in the many coats of lacquer you will need to keep from repeating this again. The color match will work it self out in the layers.

Like I said I have used both spry cans and spry guns.... You can brush it on, but you do run a risk of sanding through next to the brush on, in trying to sand down the lines that the brush on paint has formed. Brushing on the paint leaves the paint a little proud to the paint that is on it. If it were a chip then that is another story.
Like Dane said," the clear will take care of any over spray. But do what you think is best, what you feel cnofortabal with.

You can limit the overspray by cutting hole in a piece of paper a shooting through that. Just watch out for creating an edge that will need to be sanded flush.

Concur with the advice hereā¦sanding/repairing a color coat is one of those things that really tests your patience and faith! Again, I have turned decent guitars into relics because of paint blunders!
Look forward to seeing it complete.
