Simply amazing work man. I'm taken away. it's beautiful. how does it sound? I picture something just a hair brighter than mahogany due to density. have you worked with teak much? reason I ask is I have a piece of teak I've been thinking about using as a fretboard, was wondering if anyone knew how that would feel and what kind of finish if any id need to apply. once again though amazing work.

Hey notdan, I think a Teak fret board wood be sweet. Very durable wood. I'd finish with fret board oil just like rosewood. And the sound is great. Of course you'd expect me to say that but I'm very critical of my own work. The very first jonah body shape I built ( the copper metal flake ) was Maple and Mahogany and for some reason, maybe the thinness, 1 1/2" it was so bright it bugged me. I had EMG ceramic's in it and changed them out for GFS p-90's. Warmed it right up. Anyway this one is awesome, very clear when clean and some major grit with overdrive. This is the first Teak guitar but it will not be the last. I will chamber the next one even more although at 8 lbs. it weighs the same as both my Teles. Thank you for your kind remarks. Later bro. dane

So Dane you have been the modest one?, here I am struggling build a kit and you making your own part from scratch. I am truly impressed, I was thinking maybe I can try to do what your doing but several years ago I sold all my wood working equipment since I got into working on some classic cars then I did ten years of taxidermy.
So maybe in you spare time you can build me a Tele like body and maple neck. ;D
Great job,,,,, Rob

Rob, Didn't mean to ignore your post bro. Very kind words, thanks. I bought a 69' VW bus almost two years ago and was planning to gut and tub it and and build a frame under it and drop a rear mounted v8 big block or hemi in it. That says nothing of interior or paint or wiring or all the other thousands of dollars it would take. I think I've decided to dump it and put my money into guitars. Much cleaner work with no time on by back. Spare time? dane

When I was in high school a friend of mine did that to a VW buss. His had a 427 in it and he use to go out on this back road where the school was and pull wheelies! There was another guy that had a VW bug with a 327 in it. It was Cool. Boy that was a fun time. Hot rods, Drag racing, rock-n-roll!

Dane just figured you were busy building guitars! So I see a lot of us have a lot of hobbies!,,,, I have a 1968 Chevy Truck I am building and maybe it will be finished before I get to old to drive it. My Father was a drag racer and was the first drive of the Rich Quasco’s Pure Hell funny car (Elwyn Carlson). So we have been working on cars for a long time now, but my newest things is these darn guitars. And you know you just can’t have one!,,,,, Hey Dane I was saying before about doing a vintage Tele an go for the look like the guitar Springsteen used, do you know if that is the butterscotch blonde or just natural? I own a Fender Light Ash Natural Telecaster but it is a lot less in color like the old ones. www.eddriscoll.com/photos/gtrs/tele8-04.jpgRob

Hi Rob, Any reason to do guitar research is good enough for me. I lucked out and hit this with my first search. www.angelfire.com/pa2/STONEMANGUITARS/boss.htmlThis guy claims to have held the Boss's Tele in his own hot little hands. He builds a copy and gives lots of details on his web site. Enjoy. Butterscotch, by the way. The 68 sounds like fun. I had a 1930 5 window model A hot rod in high school. And the idea of a project car always looks good to me. That's why I got the V dub. But the expense and effort involved just about wear me out just thinkin' about it. dane

Man I sure do miss building Hot Rods. But I just can't build them anymore. I have a real bad neck. I have to play my guitars sitting down. Even the lite wait ones give me heck with the strap on and trying to stand. I had a 64 Chevelle that had 402 big block and would pull the front wheels off the ground. I even had a 69 Z28 I built from the ground up. Was clocked doing 142+ in it. ( that was wrong...but fun) ;D Now I build guitars. Sure wish I could spend the money on them like I did when building hot rods...

I hurt my back 20 years so I do the work but just a bit slower ,,,,,,,So I guess the Butterscotch color is like a semi transparent color? I guess all depends on how many coats you spray on, some look transparent and some don¡¦t. Maybe I should paint the Tele the same color I am going to paint the 68 Chevy Truck? Chevy Blue metallic??? Or build a couple of guitars ƒº I was looking at just buying the parts and not a kit, it looks like I can get better quality body and neck?? Any thoughts on that??? Rob

Rob I have done that. I have bought the body and neck then put it all together. The hardest part in doing that is making the neck fit right and getting the bridge on right. Unless you luck out and everything fits! Have you looked Grizzly? They sell some real cool up scale kits. A Little pricey but cool. The guitar on the Saga saga build page with the 56 Chevy is one I built the way you are talking about. I got the body and the neck and put it all together. It was a cool build. The only thing that went bad was I had to repaint it because for some reason the first paint I put on it started to fade and crack. So I stripped it down and repanted it to look like my old 56 Chevy Hot Rod. But it can be done.

Hi Rob, My "Non Saga" tele in Saga Saga's was assembled from parts as you are considering. I encountered a few "issues" (neck alignment, bridge alignment, tuner hole spacing) along the way. In the end my cost was close to about $400 to build the guitar, or about the same as my SAGA LP kit cost after all of my upgrades. Both instruments are excellent players.

I know what you guys mean about the fitting issues with the neck, my last Strat build was a kit but I got a Mighty Mite all maple neck which was great but I had a lot of issues with the neck alignment. I was able to get it figured out and it plays great but there were times I wondered if it was going to work!...... I did see Grizzly’s and they did look better but I need a maple neck w/ maple fret board and I have not seen any kits like that out there?

Yeah sometimes you can order the kit with the M and M necks. I know you can order Sagas with an up graded neck. I don't know if Grizzly's guitars if you can. I love the M and M necks too (maple on Maple) I also love humbuckers. But just about every build I have done are set up with the M and M necks with humbuckers. So I thought I would change things around on my next build. Mostly because I am building out parts I already have. So I have a humbucker, two single coils, and a maple neck with rosewood fret board. Should turn out cool! I'm just trying to decide if I want to use a fender stile Trim bridge or a hard tail. I love the hard tails.

Yes I love the look of the maple $ maple necks and I love how they feel. And maybe on my next Strat build I will try the hard tial bridge. I have 2 now with the tremelo, and both have 3 single coil pickups. But first I would like to build a Tele, then maybe a a Strat style with the humbuckers and no pickguard! that is if I get better at this guitar building thing! I have only done 2 but the second one came out really nice....
Have a great weekend! Rob
