Well, if you can I would take the plunge and build one from scratch. I am on my 3rd one now and I have to say it is real satisfying to take some wood and turn it in to something like a guitar. I do wish I had more tools but it's like everything that you work on with your hands you all ways seem to need more tools for something. I just got my drill press a few month ago (B-day present from my brother) But until then all I had was my first ever router and a jig saw. Oh and a file and a lot of sand paper. I now want to start making my own necks. So I have been looking at ways to do them with out having to spend a lot on more tools. But the way things are going at my job it will prob. be a while before that will happen. (any one need someone to work for them full time?) just thought I would ask...

Yep, don't know when I migth stop building them, maybe when they are no longer fun to do??
Wife wanted me to maybe build some and see if I could sell them but that would be hard to let them go?? unless the money is right I guess...........

Hi guys, I had this Teak guitar on ebay at 1850. and didn't get a hit. I built it with the intent of selling, but it is a tough market with all the cheap crap that is out there. People are way to impressed with glitzy web sites and video and I just don't know how to play that game. That is why I started the guitar give away thread. I figure if a well known player likes your stuff you have a better chance to sell guitars. But as an unknown builder it's it's going to be pretty iffy. I told you I sold one guitar but the kid who bought it is a know body (guitar player speaking wise). It probably hasn't left his house since he got it. And it is hard letting them go but I can't justify building more if they don't sell. It is as you know not the most expensive of hobbies but it does add up. I've considered building guitars and not buying tuners or pick ups for them until I have a buyer but that might make it even more difficult to sell. I am also going to start building acoustic guitars, and we'll see where that avenue leads me. Hard to know the best way to go but I'll just keep chipping away until an answer presents itself and see what happens. dane

I know it is hard to sell them. I have tried to sell some of mine but the people that I have tried to sell them too seem to think I should sell them to them for less than what I have in to them. I had my bubble popped just the other day in trying to sell one of the guitars I build. So for me I am going to build guitars for me. I can't afford to buy the ones I would like to own so now I can build them. As long as I can work that is. All of the guitars I have built so far are all one of a kind. No one out there has the exact one. I told my wife I am going to build or make something to hang the guitars up in the living room. Not only do they all play and sound good they are works of art. The wife wanted me to try and sell some of them and that is why I was trying too. So it is a labor of love and I only hope when my time is up here on earth that the person or persons who get them will enjoy them as much as I did building them.

Hey eagleblues, I have the same problem I make original jewelry it is unique handcrafted and one of a kind, lots of people don't apreciate that enough to pay you for it! All the cheap jewelry and guitars comming from china and Italy make them want something for nothing! www.bonanzle.com/booths/wirewrapper P.S. I would rather buy a custom made guitar built with TLC, than one that came off an assembly line built by someone that did'nt care!

I would rather buy a custom made guitar built with TLC, than one that came off an assembly line built by someone that did'nt care! Yeah that is one reason I got into building guitars. I am so tired of going into music stores and seeing all the guitars that are built the same way. Most of the people that work at some of these music stores don't have a clue. I can't tell you how many guitars I have played in music stores that have a poor set up with junk strings. I also got tired of the music stores and the shoddy work. So I started to learn how to fix them myself. I have one guy at the moment that brings me his guitars to work on. I have been trying to talk him in to letting me build him a custom guitar just for him. So far all I get is he's thinking of it but at the same time he keeps telling other guitar players about me. So who knows maybe some day I'll get to build a guitar for someone else other than my self.

Yeah maybe some. But there some that would have you think they have no money then there are some with more than they know what to do with the money they do have. Then there are them that have money and won't spend any of it...

I have had my own business for a while and people are always trying to get something great for next to nothing, and when it is something like being able to build and create something using your talents they seem still not to care. I always think to myself and maybe had told a few would be customers, hey if it’s that easy “DO IT YOURSELF”! I did sell my first build for what I had into it, so now I can do another! That’s pretty much all I wanted…. rob

Great thread, Dane. Thanks for contributing to the forum -- great jigs! Question: what kind of finish will you put on the teak? I know the WWII battleships had teak decks because the salthingyer wouldn't faze it! My grandfather was on the USS Colorado and he used to talk about the decks. Is the wood oily? Curious minds... John +1 on the jigs... they sure look like they make the process more controlled and easier! Great job on the guitar too!

Somehow I have missed this. Looks great. I really like the wood color, especially the body. Congratulations.
