Lately I've been listening to an a lot of a band called "Cry Of Love" who were from the Raleigh, NC area back in the late 80's and early 90's. They put out a couple of CD's and it is really some great stuff! The guitarist is Audley Freed... he's a monster guitarist! And very underrated too. He later went on to play with the Black Crowes and has become a sought after studio guitarist in Nashville, TN where he now resides. Go to Youtube.com and search for him or the band and check them out.
Another I've been spending a lot time listening is ZZ Top... "Reverend Willie G" is the best. Now I listen to mostly the older CD's not much after the early 80's although there are still great morsels on those disks too.
Couple of other guitar oriented bands I've been digging are Tommy Castro's "Painkiller" CD. I also have some smokin' guitar CD's from Jimmy Thackery.
I've been really getting back to my blues roots... havin' some fun! I played so much hard rock and metal from the 70's thru the 80's and 90's I kinda got burned out on it. I still love it all. Frankly the newer metal just don't do much for me... some of it has flashes of brilliance but most of its lame, overproduced, vocals sounding like demonic possession or a cat being run over by a motorcycle! Just not my cup o' tea. I'm into Sabbath, Maiden, Megadeth, Ozzy, Priest and bands from that genre/style.

I've been a fan of the Eagles since the beginning. I got the Hell freezes over cd about 10 yrs after it was released and then the Long road out of Egypt. Those guys are still amazing and tight and Henley has got to be one of the best lyricists ever. Just good solid stuff. But another guy, Derek Web writes really good thought provoking lyrics, and has been for years. First with the band Caedmon's Call and than as a solo. I mostly listen to christian rock for my own self preservation. There are some good edgy groups. One of my favs was Steve Taylor (80s-90s) kind of new wave punk thing going on but again very good lyrics. But when you just gotta rock it's the 70s for me. Journey, Boston, REO, Nugent, Framton, maybe the 60s Humble Pie? dane edited to correct misspelled names.

I stumbled across these guys on YouTube, I was so impressed I hit their website and bought 3 copies of their CD, 1 for me and 2 to give to a couple friends. The name of the band is Tragedy and they are an all metal tribute to The Bee Gees. That's right, I said The Bee Gees. Yes, I like The Bee Gees and yes, I am comfortable with that. My musical tastes are rather eclectic as I am a big fan of the following: Tom Waits, Todd Rundgren, Dave Stoddard, Steely Dan, Lyle Lovett, Suicidal Tendencies, Chet Baker, Journey, Tom Lehrer, John Prine, Pretenders, Reverend Horton Heat, Morphine, Stan Getz, New Sun Union, Jeff Buckley, Faith No More, Primus, Thelonious Monk, Joe Pass, Heart, Cheap Trick, KISS, Dwight Yoakum, Curtis Church, Supertramp, Jim Croce, Ceux Qui Marchent Debout, Doobie Bros., Thin Lizzy, k d lang, White Trash, Holly Cole, Stone Temple Pilots, Zone7, The Police, Ben Folds Five, Joe Jackson, Leon Redbone, Journey, The Beatles, Kings X, Led Zeppelin, Willie Wisely Trio, and old ZZ Top.

Wow! Cry of Love! They got a lot of airplay up here circa 1993 or 94. I got the "Brother" cd when it came out. One of the local radio stations used to play "Peace Pipe", "Bad Thing", and "Too Cold in the Winter" a lot until they went alternative (bleah...) a year or so later. I listen to a little bit of everything. I have a ton of stuff between vinyl, cassette, and cd - anything from the Moody Blues to Testament. I tend to go through phases where I listen to one group, then switch to another. I've been stuck on Roth-era VH for a while, but I'll listen to most any classic rock or old school metal. I also have a closet passion for rockabilly, and I'll admit openly that when "Stayin' Alive" came on the radio the other day, I turned it up.

So notdaniel, As I type this I am listening to Dream Theater, the only band I've even heard of from your links. Their bassist is completely gonzo. Of all the other links my fav is Gov't Mule. No surprise there. Do we need to worry about this identity thing you have going on? dane

I still listen to a lot of XM 41 and 42 -- rock on! I'm going to see DragonForce with my son tonight. Will report back...I just want to see if they can really play that stuff!!!
//UPDATE// The concert was very cool -- no trouble or fighting -- but it was exhausting.
The first band was "PowerGlove". They called their style "Video Game Metal"...no joke. They were dressed-up, GWAR-style, in these Warrio-style costumes. Good players who finished the set with "Go, Go PowerRangers". Very unique -- killer double bass.
The second was "Turisas". They called their style "Battle Metal"..really, no joke. They were dressed like extras to "Braveheart"...skins, makeup, and all. They had an accordian player and violionist. Not bad players, but my son thought it was lame.
DragonForce came on and played about 100 minutes at 180 beats per minute. It was extremely speedy, and, like I said, exhausting. Try tapping your foot that fast for an hour and a half! The guitar playing was killer, but really started to sound the same. I was praying for a power ballad that never came. Technically well done but very difficult to listen to. Bottom Line: This concert is only for the most hard-core fans.
Tip for young guys: The lead singer in DragonForce was one, non-stop "F Bomb" between songs. That really gets tiresome, also. Clean it up.
Just my opinion, John

Yes, I like The Bee Gees and yes, I am comfortable with that. The Bee Gees!? I can't openly say I like them. haha. I'll have to check tragedy out sometime. Discovered this band a few years ago Beatallica. Pretty brilliant and well done. Whether your a Beatles fan, hate new Metallica or hate the Beatles, love the "Black" album, or possibly hate them both! Blackened in the USSR, Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band, The Thing That Should Not Let It Be, Everybody's Got A Ticket To Ride The Lightning! The list goes on. Somebody permanately borrowed my cd, I need another copy! With that, I'm outta here!

Lately, i've been listening to Skid Row and Van Halen. A little bit of Metallica, I used to be all over Guns n' @#$%ing Roses, and every now and then, I slip in some good ol' AC/DC.

Yeah, I figured that would be your response! They were popular here for about ten minutes back in 2002. There are enough plastic paddy bands here in Buffalo to start a record label, let alone a section in the record store. They all come out of the woodwork on or about March 17th with their pipes a-wailing and their kilts a-flapping in the Lake Erie breeze to play their covers of "Clancy Lowered the Boom", only to disappear until next year.

When I go to my local music store “Skips” and I sort of hang out play a few guitars and wish I had a few of them I feel old with all the young kids in there, and kind of had that same feeling reading these posts of music everyone is listening to, although I did know some of them. When you play a instrument at least for me musical interest changes a little. Lately I have gone back to listening to Pink Floyd and the guitar work of David Gilmore, then back to Tom Petty for fun. My real interest are always with Bruce Springsteen, I have been a fan since the 70’s when I heard the song Rosalita. Nils Lofgren who is in the band has on his web site guitar lesson which I have been trying out, just seems great to be learning from a real pro who has been playing and making a living at it for 40 years. And like the earlier post of the Bee Gee’s I have to say while no I don’t listen to them but I have also been listening to Boz Scaggs, there are some live stuff on YT. I have been trying to try my hand with vocals and he does know how to sing,,,,, But since I am in my 50’s the classic rock is my favorite, but I do enjoy finding out about some good newer artist. I was car pooling with my daughter for a while and had to listen to her radio stations and heard some Gin Blossoms and like some of it and thought I was cool I liked a new band only too find out they were from the 90’s?? oh well at least I’m catching up ;D Rob
