I've found the only way to keep in playing shape is to keep playing. If I do have a layoff, I start back with scales just a little a time. No 2-3 hour marathon sessions to start with. I've found as I've gotten older that it is easier to get an injury, and it takes longer to recover.
Watch those tendons, especially in the left ring finger!
Good luck, John

Thank you for reminding me of the one thing I should have learned from growing old. PATIENCE. Take it slow, things will work their way back.

Right, PATIENCE is the key! As you get older you really DO become more succeptible to injury and the healing process becomes agonizingly long. Play a little every day, a couple of times a day if you can until you start to regain some stamina. I find that when I lay off for a little while that, though my technique gets worse (as my muscles get stiffer), my creativity improves greatly! So now, at almost 51, I go through a constant cycle of playing / not playing / playing / not playing... if you're careful not to hurt yourself, your playing can actually improve.

Thanks man you have me by ten years! I will take it slow, in fact even if I were 20 I would. I haven't played in 5 years! I just hate practically relearning everything again. Patience, I just needed a reminder of it. P.S. for all you out there who think 41 isn't old, I could have went blind from torn and degraded retina's just 8 months ago. Bad hips, ankles, AND knees! Young folk take note!, Take care of yourself now or you just might regret it later! Drugs, drinking hard, playing to hard, not only catches up to you but WILL run your ass over! Take care and live long and healthy!!
