I went into my local Sam Ash yesterday to pick up some of the screws that my saga kit was missing and I saw this little half stack for the low price of $350. A half stack amp for $350? They must be asking $350 for the head and the cab is sold seperately. But lo and behold, it's actually $350 for the whole deal. It piqued my interest so I went onto harmony-central and checked it out. I was AMAZED to find that it's a hybrid amp, it's got a 12AX7 tube for the preamp and 60w of solid state output. There's even a hotter 100w head that can be purchased for a mere $50 more (the GT100 model).
The cabinet is a 4x10 mini slant cab. I wonder how this little head would sound pushing 4 Celestion 30's.
At first I was apprehensive because Hartke is primarily known for their bass amplification, and the RIDICULOUSLY low price was too good to be true. So temptation got ahold of me and I went back to the store to check it out.
The first guitar that the over eager sales rep handed me was a '52 reissue butterscotch Tele. Channel 1 is for clean to crunchy tones and the Tele sang out some bitchin' bluesy twang, while channel 2 (the overdrive channel) took this guitar to the ragged edge of Rockabilly. After swapping out for an early 90's Gibson Les Paul standard with notably higher output, the amp switched from a slightly agitated "B.B. King" mode to snarling, screaming "K.K. Downing mode". On lower gain levels the amp emparted some super fuzzy 70's southern rock tones and on the clean channel it sang out with some awesome chimey Les Paul warmth.
I didn't get a chance to plug in a Strat unfortunately but that's okay because I'm already SOLD on this amp.
For the price, you can't beat the versatility and absolutely BITCHIN' hot tones of this amp. If any of you get a chance to play on one of these mini-powerhouses let me know what you think.
Unfortunately, I did not purchase the amp. I don't have the money right now, but if there is ANY way I can raise the $350 before I ship out for boot camp, by God almighty I will buy this amp.
