I know that there are some out there!

Guitar center in Pittsburgh would be mine. I went down to Pittsburgh for training one year and I made a list of all the stuff I wanted. Blew $400 in 10 minutes....

If I were in Europe, there is no equal -- Tommy's Guitar Shop in Viersen, Germany is the coolest shop on that side of the Atlantic. On this side (US, that is...) -- Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville.
Come on....are there any others out there?

Well, I have a favorite Guitar REPAIR Store that like ... which is Guitar Precision in Phoenix.
After dealing with almost every shop in town ( and working with countless guitar repair people with difficult attitudes, knowledge deficits and inflated prices ) I gave Jim a shot.
So far he's done some excellent levelling, crowning and dressing for me, completed a custom wiring job and even took a Squier Showmaster off my hands for it's equivalent price in free labor. Plus, his prices are reasonable and he's easy to deal with.

I don't know if its still there, but rythum city in Atlanta treated a young punk with no money awful well. Pick and grin in Ashville N.C. were very cool til they closed. MY favorite though was a practical junk shop in Atlanta, can't remember the name. I did buy a washburn falcon copy there for 25 dollars, no lie. Set 3 piece mohagany neck, mohagany body. I dropped some dimarzio super 2,s in it and sold it for 200. Regreted it ever since. I THINK it was across fom treasure island and old sarges military surplus if any of THAT'S still there.I hope so, fond memories of being 14.

I remember going to Rhythm City in Atlanta when I was a youngster. The way I remember it, that place was the ultimate store in the Southeast back in the 70's and early 80's.
Man, they had a lot of gear jammed in that store!
I was at Corner Music in Nashville a few weeks back, and that is a very nice store. My son really likes Fork's Drum Closet.

I think all the truly cool spots have mostly fell the wayside. Good mom and pop stores gone. Great pawn shops gone. Everything now is mass, fast, and just money takin' oriented. I REALLY lament the slow rundown of the pawn industry( at least here in WNC.) Nowadays pawns want 500 greenies for a squire bullet thats been modified with a chain saw. Try to negotiate and you get "its made by FENDER man! Take it or leave it!" Yeah, FENDER, riiiiiiiight. Keep it genius. I hope the pendullum swings back the other way in my lifetime!!

Whenever I'm traveling I deliberately seek out small music shops. I went into a fantastic guitar shop in Flagstaff AZ last June. The place was called Custom Sound Instruments. Small shop run by a local Guitar Guru. Fantastic guy to talk to. I didn't go into Arizona Music Pro since it looked like a huge box store to me.... Another great store I found was in the village of Georgina Ontario near the southern end of Lake Simcoe. Picked up a nice mid-70's J-45 there. Locally I visit Pongetti's Music in Hamilton, and I've been dealing with Lakeshore music for over 20 years (now part of Long & McQuade chain) in Burlington, ON.

I don't have the time to hang out in guitar stores anymore, and even if I did, there's nowhere in Buffalo where I'd care to. I've been to Top Shelf Music, but I think they're overpriced. We used to have a Music-Go-Round here, but it went out of business. I used to go there because the employees didn't mind if you just poked around. One of the guys was a VH/Hagar fan, and we rocked out on old Montrose stuff during one of my visits. When they were going out of business, he gave me an ART DST830 (with an X-11 pedalboard!) in an even trade for a Vox Cambridge twin reverb. We also had a Daddy's Junky Music, but their building burned down, and they never reopened. Of course, we have Guitar Center, but they're too corporate for me. Oddly, I lived in Phoenix for several years, and never made it to Guitar Precision. I usually went to Music-Go-Round in Mesa. A lot bigger than the one that used to be here, and they had some cool used gear. When I was in high school, my friend and I used to go to Marich Music on Market Street in Corning, NY. They put up with us mainly because we didn't break anything. They actually let us borrow the Fostex 4-track they had on display to record some stuff, but this was close to 20 years ago. Good luck getting that kind of customer relations now.

I found a place called Rainbow Guitars in Tucson that is fantastic. If my wife would let me, I'd hang out there everyday!
I just moved here from the midwest a couple of years ago, so maybe all larger sized cities have shops like these but I've never seen anything like it, and it's not a chain. They have signed guitars from all sorts of artists hanging on the walls, an entire room for electric guitars and bass, another full (humidified) room of acoustics. Another room for amps. Another room of keyboards and electronics, plus another full room for their pro equipment. Their repair shop is just one door down the street and has about four or five guys working full time. The guys there are extremely friendly and helpful.
It's a good thing it's not real close. It's a good drive downtown, or I'd be there all the time! And their prices are great......
The also have a webste rainbowguitars.com. Check them out if you're in Tucson.

We're going to be spending some time it the Atlanta, Georgia area over the next few months. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cool guitar/amp shop down there?
Thanks John
