I went with my son to see Zappa Plays Zappa and Dream Theater a few weeks back. I'M NOT WORTHY!
I'm just trying to practice so I can build back some self respect on the guitar!

I think right now I am in a really strange playing phase. I can alternate pick as fast as ever, but for some reason i go thru they stupid stages where i can even down pick slow stuff. I pretty much forget how to. I HATE IT! I just makes me not want to play anymore.

John The current Guitar World has an interview with John Petrucci. Cool insight into how they interact and contribute to the music.

Those guys are great musicians. We really enjoyed the show and the musicianship was just killer. I NEED TO PRACTICE!
By the way -- Mr. Petrucci had a huge stack of Mesa Boogies, and his tone was awesome. Mr. Zappa was playing an SG through the new Fractal "direct boxes" -- no amps -- and his tone was just stunning...very accurate Zappa tone.
I saw Dweezil play at a NAMM show in 1987, and I knew he was killer. OK...he still is. See this show if you can.

We finally started buying F. Zappa and Mothers records a couple of years ago. Amazing guitar abd tone on those records. We're working up to the Deezil stuff. I wish my Dad was a prodigy guitar player.
I can't seem to figure out slide! I like when other people play it.
Currently, I'm trying to learn everything I've forgotten!

Hos rote Currently, I'm trying to learn everything I've forgotten! Seems I do that a lot too. This one band I was in back in 1970 I had to learn a lot of song in a hurry. I was hired into this working band. We played all over the place. Anything from NCO clubs to night clubs. Back then I also had to learn to dance with the guitar on me because we were what was called back then a show band. I learned so many songs at that time and now I find myself trying to remember them.

Hoz - Slide isn't too tough if you use open tunings. Open G is pretty common - DGDGBD (low to high). Great tuning for slide and 90% of anything by the Stones.

Ok, so I got Sultans of Swing down a while back, and figured I can maybe fingerpick with some degree of competence.
Sooooo, I take a look at the Crazy On You tab in the latest GW last night, and the intro reminds me of how much of a hamfisted nitwit I truly am. Argh! Darn you, Nancy Wilson!

I knew I was getting older when I started not recognizing people on the cover of Guitar World. hehehhehehe... "dagnab kids with their seven string guitars and their detuning!! In my day, six strings at standard tension was all we had and we liked it...
[/i] I feel ya Shattered... I feel ya... BTW: I'm currently transposing and adapting Pete Huttlinger's finger style version of 'Josie' by Steely Dan to my six string ukulele.

HAHAHA! If a string broke, we had to mine our own iron ore to make a new one!

Hey eddie, I ended up learning it in standard tuning because I only have one acoustic guitar and with the new set up with the band being just me and a bass player and me playing only acoustic I didn't want to retune the guitar for only one song. I did learn it though and we played it just last Sat. night at a coffee house, great fun. I have always really liked that tune. Once I got it down it seems very easy. Still I'm always amazed at how people come up with this stuff in the first place. I could have never picked it out on my own, you tube is great for that. Way better than tab. d

So cool! I have seen that tune played so many ways. But yes it is a little hard to re tune. And yes You Tube has become one of my favorite places to learn some new stuff. Yhere is a lot of good teaching on there. You know you talk about coming up with stuff. I was listing to some stuff I recorded a long time ago you know I think I payed better then. I can't believe some of the stuff I was doing back then. I found myself trying to remember how I did that stuff. It's almost like it was another life time or a dream but it was indeed me playing. Today all I do is turn on my amp and play some blues stile stuff. I guess I have slowed down at my age and all the cool licks I once did are now in my past.
