Yes! "One break...comin' up!" Which tone do you like better: Unchained (still kind of brown/Frankie) or the Peavy/Wolfgang tone of "Humans Being"? John You had to ask that, didn't you! In general, I like his Roth-era tone better. It's got a lot of bite, and he rocked with the Echoplex and the phaser. I think he lost a lot of that sound when he started making deals with Peavey, Ernie Ball/Music Man, and so on. That being said, I *do* like his sound on Humans Being, because I think whatever setup he used captured some of the bite of his older work, and because I think it just fits with that opening riff. As an aside, it's kind of sad that the only ones to show up for VH's induction into the HOF were the ones who aren't in the band anymore. I'd better stop now, because I could talk VH all day!

As an aside, it's kind of sad that the only ones to show up for VH's induction into the HOF were the ones who aren't in the band anymore. A shame? It was "shameful"! I love Van Halen, but that was a true low point -- maybe the lowest. I remember seeing the show, and Sammy Hagar had the class to even thank Gary Cherone...while the other dudes didn't show! Oh well -- I do like the "Humans Beings" tone! John

I remember seeing the show, and Sammy Hagar had the class to even thank Gary Cherone...while the other dudes didn't show! I think Ed had just entered rehab at that time. I don't know why anyone else wouldn't have showed up. It would have been great publicity for the tour...you'd think...not that VH need to advertise. Except for Humans Being, I think his sound has gotten a little more chime-y than it was, and I'm not sure why. He's been playing HH guitars for long time, and he's said in the past that single coils sound too thin, but he really seems to be capturing more of a strat kind of tone on stuff like the intro to Me Wise Magic. Maybe some coil tapping? BTW, thanks for the update on the Frankie-in-progress! I've been dying to see where it's at now! -Mike /hijack

[BTW, thanks for the update on the Frankie-in-progress! I've been dying to see where it's at now! -Mike Mike -- more is coming on the Frankie. Progress is slow on the finish, but I've got it playing great and it sounds killer. I think the greatest example of "brown sound" is on "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" on VHII. EVH was playing his Frankie, and the tone on the solo break is killer. Of course, that is my opinion. I've been listening to a lot of old VH lately. Oddly, I've been working on a new album of originals, too...with lots of guitar solos! John

Here's where we disagree - I think "Atomic Punk" epitomizes the brown sound. There's a growling dive bomb right before one of the verses that sets my nether region on fire!

I'm not learning anything new, just getting reacquainted with stuff I used to be able to play years ago. A few weeks back, I dug up a 3" deep stack of tabs I've printed from various websites since the early 90s...stuff I'd completely forgotten about! I've been rocking out some Stray Cats, Blue Oyster Cult, and SRV, to name a few. There's actually not much new stuff out there that I like anymore. I knew I was getting older when I started not recognizing people on the cover of Guitar World. How True!

We just added "Crossroads", more or less the Cream live version, to our set list. And also a few weeks back "Jesus is just right". Neither song is terribly difficult and lots of fun to play. I brought Crossroads into the band and had planned on our main singer/ bass player to do the vocals but the drummer kind of insisted on singing it. Long story short I ended up singing it and we put it right in the set. It's been one of my favs for a long time. d

Hey... I use to play Crossroads back in the day. I haven't played that for a long time now. Hummm I'll have to see if I can remember how to play that. I think I have it on my computer somewhere in all the music I have on there. Hey if anyone ever needs a song (MP3) let me know I have something like 20,000 + MP3s I just might have something your looking for.
