Had a little time off not to long ago and decided to sit down and learn "The Rain Song" (the way jimmy page played it live).

I've moved on to "Sultans of Swing". It's really not difficult - it's mostly variations of a few fills. That song and "Dust In the Wind" have done wonders to improve my fingerpicking.

I'm learning to play some cello music. Sounds kind of Yngwie-like, but it is really interesting.
I like to learn a lot of different songs in different styles. I find it makes my playing more "versatile" sounding even if it isn't!
I had a great instructor when I was young. He always told me to play every note like it would be my last and my reputation would be based on it. He was into precision and the true craft of creating music on the guitar. I'm still trying to live up to it!

Well... lemme see... "Little Wing" and "Wind Crys Mary" by Jimi Hendrix... the right way and "Tightrope" by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Also I've been learning some Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tommy Castro, ZZ Top (Chevrolet, It's Only Love, Balinese and more). I also bought a really good guitar instruction software and videos to learn a bit more modern "shredding" techniques... sweeping and stuff. Oh.... and I got another cool software called "Riffmaster Pro" which makes learning solos from records really nice. Slows them down up to half speed without affecting the tuning! Real cool if you're learning stuff for your band and want it to sound spot on! ;D

I went back to the "Hendrix at Monterey" DVD after watching part of the concert on VH1 last night. I didn't realize he was quoting "Strangers in the Night" during "Wild Thing". He was playing the "Monterey Strat" and it was killer. BTW -- that was the only song Hendrix ever played on with the Strat with the custom paint. He may have played it prior to the custom paint, but I haven't seen any evidence either way.
I don't think that song could be duplicated by a band as played by Hendrix. It's like each of the guys in the band were playing separate songs at max volume, but somehow it fit together. Kind of like "free jazz" meets "Marshalls on 11."

Cheap Trick's House is Rockn' w/ Domestic Problems. That riff got stuck in my head so bad, all I could do was hammer it out on the guitar. Since I got the Fall Guy DVD the Unknown Stuntman has been stuck in my head, but I think I'm going to let that one die out on it's own. Keep meaning to jam on some Hendrix agian!

I've been working on Mason's version for something like 25 years. It's close and you can recognize it but there are differences.
Had a fantastic jam session on Saturday with a bunch of friends. Played for 4 hours alternating between my LesPaul and my SG. By the end of the night even my SG was starting to feel heavy. Both were sounding really nice, However my friend's Godin Velocity through a nice Traynor tube amp just sounded amazing.
