Alright folks, Roadie #3 is being born as I type. Well sort of. I worked on the body and top blanks last night and this evening got things sized up and roughed out. I mentioned the ash body was very heavy and that I would weight relieve it as much as needed. It needed more and in the process I kind of screwed it up. See if you can figure out what went wrong. Hint it's not any of the overlapping holes. Just put the full weight pic in there for fun. Plus the top weighs 1lb.

Well I'm a bit puzzled by what looks like a marked position for a third neck pickup that leaves little scope for a neck pocket but I guess that could just be the perspective?

I was going to say the same thing about the pickups. But to me it also looks like you may have also went a little deep on some of hogging out. But that's my two guesses.

The neck pocket is not a problem. Cause the neck extends into the pickup route. Plenty of glue surface. Exactly like Greenie/ Roadie #1.
The problem is (Eddie got this partly right) I bored holes to deep for the belly carve. I forgot all about it. If someone was cool with only the arm contour it would fly. the weight is still to much though. Although I could continue to hog wood out. I like the look of the ash a lot. But oh well, going on to the alder.

So I got this routed out as much as I'm going to. Total weight is a fuzz over 5#s. Top included. Also glued the top on last night. This is not the going to be the body for this build but since I started with it I thought I'd finish the thought.

If it's going to be painted (or even a dark edged sunburst), you could have let a bit of wood in where you weight relieved too deep and then chamfer the gut cut? Too late now with the top on I know, but it crossed my mind after thinking on it some.

But you're right I do seem to do dark edges. It never occurred to me to try and fix it. Past finishing it as is as more of a tele squared edged thing. I'll build it out at some point or toss it into the neighbors wood pile.

I just remembered the guy who installed our mahogany front door. He badly splintered the old frame but he "let a bit in" and although you could see the new timber against the old paint you couldn't feel the joint at all. Folks that work such magic with wood have my respect in barrels Dane. Present company included!

At least you were able to save the body for another day. What I think happened the wood has told you what it wants to be. I too have made some guitars to were I had to change things to make it be a guitar. I always looked at the that wood didn't like what I started. So after arguing with it I went with what it wanted to be. LOL!

Dane - That is a great looking piece of wood. That northern ash can be on the heavy side, but it looks great under a transparent finish.

I guess you're right Eddie, board gets to be what it wants. But if it pushes me to much farther it will burn!

Ok a few pics of the real body and top. I know... looks just like the first ones. Well not exactly. The body weighs 3.6 pounds as is. So with the 1 pounds top 4.6. Think I'll drill some holes.

I drilled the holes out of the body but it only;y lightened it up by .3 oz. Went ahead and glued and vacuum clamped the top on. I was going to get one of these a long time ago. But never did. I was thinking of trying out one of them vacuum bags that we use for clothing. I was wondering if that would work for a one time thing. We have a few on hand. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it out. Hum... Now if I can sneak one out of the closet. LOL! EB
