OK, starting the Eagle Blues Guitar.
This will be my signature Guitar. There will only be one made. It will have locking tuners, 2 way truss rod, Humbucker and single coil pickups, 3 way LP switch. I may do two volume controls and no tone control.
The neck;
I'll be using some of the Birds eye maple. Here I am ruff drawing in the neck. This is an end cut off of the long board I bought. I had to have it cut so I could put it on my car.
here is a look at the sketch of the leather my son is doing for the guitar. He has it done. But, he is still on vacation. I'll have to wait on it to be sent.
So I have it drawn out on the wood that I'll be using for the neck. I figured I could get started on the neck while waiting on the leather top to arrive. Looks like I'll get one neck and 2 fret board out of this piece of Birds Eye maple. This is the first time I have used Birds eye. I am excited to see how it will look once done.
I don't want to glue up the body as of yet. I want to get the top here then pick the wood for the body. I want the body to look good with the top leather.
This is going to be an awesome build for me. I feel like my son and I are building it together. Yet, another one that will not be for sale. It will truly be a one of kind guitar in so many ways.
Next up, will be cutting or ripping the wood down to size. Running it through my joiner/planer to level or flatten the wood. It has a slight bump in it. Then redraw the profile of the neck. After that the fun starts with routing and shaping of the neck.
Yes as much as I would like to make a neck through on this guitar, I'll be doing a set neck. I just can't bring myself to use the wood needed for a neck through. I don't know if I'll ever get another chance to buy wood at wood store again.
But in saying that I do plan on doing some things I haven't done in a while and some things I have never done. Like mounting a full leather top on a guitar. Should be interesting. I have a few ideas, but any input would be nice.

This will be a great build Eddie. With the nice woods and leather top, very cool! Looks like a Tele shape is that what what you are planning?

Still pretty humid here. But I think I can get the wood cut for the neck.
I had thought of splitting the neck blank down the middle and putting in a darker center in the neck. If I can, I may also make a thin slice to go under the fret board. I'll have to do some experimenting to see If I can pull it off.

It been a long wet season here. But today I got to spend some time with my tools. Every so often I like to take a day or two, and tune up my equipment. I started out with my band saw. It's funny how things get out of aliment. I adjusted all of the bearings and stops/sliders and adjusted the tension of the saw blade. It's now working like a dream once again.
Next up is my joiner/Planer. I was surprised to find out how out of wack it was. But it's a good thing I did do some adjusting on it. I found out one of the blades is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. The hard thing about that is finding the new blades. I did find one guy on eBay that sells new ones for my planer. But, I am unsure if they will fit or not. I no longer have the owners manual for it so I don't know the number on the machine. And it's not anywhere on the machine. So, the person on eBay has a cheap set and an expensive set. So I ordered the cheap ones first to see if the work. If they do then I'll order the expensive set later on. But, it is cutting nice a square now, has a small spot that has a grove in the wood form the bad spot in the one blade.
Tomorrow, I'll do the drill press. Because of all the high humidly, it has gotten some surface rust on it that needs to come off it. Plus a good cleaning.
I did find something out while working on the planer. I used that big eraser for cleaning up sanding belts on the surface of it, and it removed the surface rust that was on it. WOW! It did a good job making it look clean.
I may wait until the new blades come in before I do anything with the neck. They are supposed to be here on the 7th.
It sure felt goo to be out side again. I hop from here on out I can do more of that.

Eddie, it's a good thing thing to tune up the once in a while. I think the mobile stuff goes out of adjustment more just because it gets moved around and is lighter duty than floor model tools.
But it's cool you got out of the house to do some stuff.

Got all the parts ordered for this build. Man the prices of things keep going up and up! Most of the things I got had free shipping. But the ones I had to pay shipping on was a little steep. But shipping I read is going to go up again. Then now I have to pay internet taxes on thing I buy, so, that makes it increase for the build as well. So the parts will be coming in front the 7th to the 11th.
I figured out what I should be charging for my custom guitar builds. But If I charged what I should, I wonder if I could get anyone to buy them... But, I can't afford to give them away as well.
The parts alone on this build would put this build in a higher value than my last build (Ms Candy). It's hard to believe that prices have gone up since I did Ms Candy. And not by a little, but a lot!
Where is going to all end? Oh well, at least I was able to get the parts.
Waiting on the new blades for the planer/joiner to come in. They should be here on the 7th. Then I can get started on the neck. Thinking of doing binding on this one. I'll be doing some test on making binding out of wood. Going to test out my new oscillating sander. I should be able to pull it off. We will see.

I gotta say shipping costs do really frost me. I want to try CF rods for neck reinforcing and the product isn't cheap but they want more $ than the product to ship it. And every time I almost bite the bullet and order it anyway, I start thinking how all the iconic guitars and their sound we loved from the 50s and 60s didn't have CF rods. And I think why fix what ani't broken.

I have been critical of the cost of shipping from the USA to here, but the last two parcels that I sent to a friend just north of New Orleans' city limits have cost me dear. I sent him a small book and it cost the equivalent of thirty bucks for the least expensive option. I only paid three bucks for the book! I guess it's just the way things are and it's time to pay the ferryman? The market will have its own way though, and logistics companies will eventually find that their bread and butter business from the distance selling revolution will be strangled by high costs of delivery.
Your new project is looking extremely promising already Eddie. Whilst not unique, the leather trimming is a distinctive approach that carries a great deal of merit, and judging by your last one this should be a doozy. It's heartening to see you so fired up about building with all that you've experienced over recent times related to your health together with the disruption from house moves.

At one time I was buying a lot of guitar parts from Canada. It was cheaper shipping if not free than what I could get in the States for. But all of that has now changed and the company I use to buy from is no longer around.
The thing that bugs me is, when gas prices here were a lot cheaper than what they are now (here in the States) the price of shipping didn't come down it was still going up and up. And now they are going to raise shipping prices even more. It won't be long it will be cheaper for me to deliver stuff than to send it through USPS or anyone else... LOL!
Yes my health is still playing a part in my builds. I don't build as fast as I was was able to. But, like this past week getting out and working on my tools outside made me feel so good, mentally. It also so relaxing to me to craft guitars out of a bunch of wood/boards. I still cannot believe that I have build some great guitars. No I am not patting myself on my back. But when I sit in my music room and look at the guitars hanging on the wall I have to say WOW! I hope others feel the same way about their builds. I forget at times how special a gift it is to build an instrument out of a pile of wood, and that not everyone can do it. The Great Guitar build off showed me that more then once.
Yes moving... Next year we will be looking to move once again. We need a place so that I can expand my shop some and be in doors. Plus we need a place without stairs. I know 18 steps may not sound like lot, but after going up and down them a few dozen times a week, it get old. Plus we have a hard time getting out land lord to do things when things need to be fixed.

And I think why fix what ani't broken. here of late I have seen some builds without a TR in them as well. I made a few cigar box guitars without TR in them and they are still as flat as the day I made them. I see a lot of people putting in CF rods in the necks. I almost started to do that. But I thought the same thing in that all of the older guitars that were made never had them.
I really don't see why one would need to put them, unless you are using some woods that like to do the twist. LOL! Maybe I have been blessed over the years. I had two neck go south on me. But they twisted before I put them in a guitar. One of them twisted before I could get the truss rod in it. It didn't make any since in why they did what they did. But, since then I have not had it happen. I have not made a lot of necks out of a lot of different kinds of woods. But I still can't talk myself into putting in the CF rods. I know they say it's to make the neck more stable. But I think that is more of a selling point than anything else. I have set up guitars with the CF rods in them. I find them no more stable that the ones without. EB

not a lot going on right now. I did go spend some time cleaning up my drill press, and shop as well. I hope this week to get started on this build. All the parts I ordered should start coming in this week. That will be fun.
It's funny how a pile of wood and guitar parts can get me excited. HA!
When I was buying the wood, the lady had to cut down the boards so it would go into my car. As soon as she and I smelled the wood being cut she and I locked eyes and said the same thing at the same time... WOW that smells good! LOL. She also liked to look at the fresh cut to see the end gran. I do that a lot as well. It's fun to know someone else that likes wood like I do.
The thing is wood is not cheap, so I can't say I am cheap date!
Well, it raining again. I hope that it goes away soon. We have had a lot of rain this year. The temps are starting to come down. That will make it nice so I can start building again.

It's a shame you had to have the wood cut, but at least you were on hand to ensure they were appropriate lengths. Freah cut wood always smells good even though the different species have different aromas. Everyone likes the smell of cut pine! We've had barely any rain for at least one month now, but also generally grey days. Odd weather for August. Don't get a Limey going on the weather guys!

Got some of the parts in along with the new blade for the joiner/planer.
Still waiting on some other part along with the leather top. I went ahead and installed the new cutting blades on the joiner/planer. It is working pretty well right now.
I'll be getting started on the neck soon. I am going to try and do this build on video. I'll see how that goes. I'll also be taking pictures in case the video don't go well. Going to try and keep my viseos short. 10 to 20 min. But may run longer or even shorter depending on what I am doing.
Now that I have everything tuned up I am now ready to get started. Along with this build I am also going to try and get the clear on the other build. So that may turn out interesting. Hum...
