Lovely nut work Dane. I'd like some of those StewMac files, but price divided by usage multiplied by taxes and duties raised to the power of despatch cost dictates otherwise! I have a set of about 10 cheap(ish) ones and at least one already has dull edges on the teeth. I found the instruction leaflet the other day and so was reminded that they're called "Norman Nut Files". I'll upload a piccie if I remember.
It seems that a parrot vise for you is a Nippy vice for me! I think "Nippy" is the trade name, rather in the way "Hoover" is used generically, but as usual the descriptive USA version makes more sense!

Steve, I made my nut file investment over a number of years as I got more involved in repair and set up.
Not sure where the Parrot name came from. "Parroting" has be come a bit of a derogatory name over here for folks that just repeat what they've heard. But maybe because the vise will swivel 360 like a parrots head.

I suspect it's because the jaws both look and perform a bit like a parrot's beak Dane, but that's pure speculation on my part. Whatever, the nut work is top drawer and nut work is another black art to me. I can "do" it and have done so too, but the end result never looks quite right, although I find the passage of years amends that perception. I think it comes down to polishing the finished article and that too is not one of my strong points. I guess sack cloth and ashes is appropriate ;<D

You may be onto something with the beak speculation with the vise.
I don't know if I got a good picture of the finished nut on this guitar. But the pic I posted is just a rough out, very rough at this point. I hop I got a good pic.
I think you are penitent enough, carry on my son.

I did get some pics of the nut finished or close. Also in progress pics. I may have taken it down a bit more. I don't typically leave the the strings that deep in the nut.

I thought that some of those slots seemed a fuzz too deep, but the overall nut quality looks lovely. Thanks for the high quality pictures.

Yes Steve they look deep. That's why I think I must have taken some off the top of the nut. But either way I didn't have any buzz or binding in the end. Here are some saddle pics, the first one is the saddle marked out roughly for intonation. I just checked it where it was and felt like those marks would take care of it. It really was perfect after the adjustment. I had to sacrifice my nut setting file because I had a bump in the saddle slot. The little piece of file flattened it right out. I hope there is enough left to still use on nut fitting.

I need to finish sanding the nut on my Teak wood build. Right now I am re-leveling the frets from 12 up. I always seem to have to do that once the set neck is glued in. I think the wood must swell up from the glue in.
I think I'm not going to put frets in on a set until the neck is glues on, then I'll radius the fret board then put in the frets.
You are doing some awesome work Dane!

Thanks Eddie. I usually just rough level frets and then do the full job once its all together. On set necks.

Is that a MIDI pickup on the guitar?
