Bummer Eddie, who would have thought it would be that hard to find a hardwood vendor. My biggest problem with the guys I use is that they are closed on the weekend. They always have the normal stuff like African mahogany, maple, alder, and poplar. And they have random exotics in random sizes. Like pauduk, wenge, bloodwood, the hearts- purple, yellow. I used to get pau ferro- Bolivian rosewood but I haven't seen that in some time. And they are an hour and a half away. There is only one place that I have found. But it's on the other side of Mobile that is about 4 to 4 1/2hr away. Everything else around here close to me sells slabs. Some of it has been dried and some not. 10' to 18' long 2" to 4" thick. I don't have a truck or a place to store anything like that. Most of the slabs I have seen are crouch wood. Not really good for anything but tables and stuff like that. So I guess I'm stuck looking for woods on line or using popular.
Buying on line means paying more for the wood. I use to get some really good deals on eBay. But now most of the people I use to deal with are no longer on eBay and the ones that are have learned to put the "Guitar Wood" in their ads so they can jack up the price. Even veneer has gone up really high.
Think I am going to look for all wood tables and such. Sometimes I can find mahogany tables on the cheap that I can use. I did that back in AZ. I even found some cheery wood that way. I always look to make sure it's not veneered wood. Lots and lots of the stuff around.
Oh well, back to building. EB

bunch of the parts are in. Still waiting on the bone nut and the tuners.
I decided to make a set of pickup rings out of teak. I start off with a piece of wood thick enough to give me two rings. I drill the holes first.
I then drill 4 holes. One in corner of the inside. I use my jig saw and cut it out.
Once the center is cut, then it goes to the band saw. I cut it to rough shape. once I have that I cut the wood in half.
Here they are pretty much done. I put one coat of Tung oil Finish on them.
I used my drill press, band saw, table top belt sander, files, sand paper, to get the ring into shape. Don't know if you can tell or not I sanded the edges so that they rounded off. I just could not put plastic rings on this guitar. It don't take me that long to make them. I pretty much have my ways of doing them, and by this stage in the game they do go quickly for me.
I had to do something today. (Cabin Fever) So as soon as the storm passed us by (after raining and going on all night and most of the morning) I needed to get outside. So, I did these rings. I was going to try and make a veneer for the peg head today. But, I think that will be another day.

Good idea to use thick wood and then resaw. They look good Eddie.

It's the little touches and the attention to small details that seals the deal. Good way to make good use if the time when the weather has other ideas.

Got the rest of the parts in today. So, now I'll be starting on it as soon as I can the build going in the right direction.
On another note... Going to do some work on my joiner/planer. Going to replace the blades on it, if I can find them. Also going to look at the bearings to see what is going on with them. The thing make a lot of noise when starting up. Once it get running it will run smooth.
Plus I need to do some checking on turning my old table top sander into a small bull-head sander. Should be a fun project. EB

Well, it looks like I was able to fix the planer/joiner. I took the shielding off it and found it was plugged up with wood dust. It was super packed in there. Most of it was by the vacuum insert or exhaust. I had to use a screw driver to get the dust to come off. Hard tell how long it's been that way. LOL!
So, note to me... start cleaning (deep) on equipment.
After realigning the fence (again) it now planes square again. At least on some test wood it did. But I do need to get new blades for it. One of the has a bad chip in it. But all in all it is working right again. I oiled everything in it that moves. It now moves freely. When I started I could not move the blade cylinder by hand. I had to pry it.

I decided to do some work on this guitar today.
I started off by making a veneer for the peg head.
it's had to see but the veneer started off at 1" thick. I sliced it on the band saw. But I first cut the shape of the head stock. Once I had that I cut a thin slice off of that. I then used two sided tape and mounted it onto the thicker wood. This was so I could you my joiner to plain it down to about a 1/16" thick.
One trick I learned a long time ago. Always cut things over size. Case in point here. You can take off wood a lot easier that putting wood back. LOL! I did cut the hole for the truss rod adjustment before gluing this time. I seem to forget to do that on some builds.
While the peg head is drying, I turned my attention to the body. I started out by fixing the spot where the router didn't like it. I had some thin pieces of wood and used it with some CA glue.
This is what it look like after cutting the wood down.
After some sanding and a little bit of filling with some sanding dust, this is what it looks like now.
I did a 3/8" round over on both sides of the body.
The back of the body
Depending on the weather, I start doing the routing for the neck, pickups and control cavity's. It's supposed to rain all the rest of the week into next week. Reason I don't work when rains here is because we also get a lot of lighting and wind. So I don't want to be out in it.

Good news on the planer Eddie.
The guitar is looking very good, almost invisible repair on the router grab.

My über expensive acoustic guitar has a router grab flaw along the upper bout. It saved me 40% of the asking price and had been largely disguised with oversized binding. I can live with that easily! If the maker hadn't told me, I would have looked at it with rose coloured spectacles and flashed the cash anyway! Given all the labour and expensive timbers I can understand why it wasn't confined to the dumpster.

Yep! I think once the finish goes on, it will be hard to see the repair.
I bought some more teak wood today. So far I really like how it can be shaped. The router, band saw, joiner/planer, and the drill press, really seem to like the wood. I think it's because of the oil that is in it.
It's been raining all day here. With some hard hitting lighting. I did take the clamps off of the peg head and things are looking pretty good that way.
I bought these new locking tuners I have not tried before. Don't know if I like them or not. I'll know more once they are on the neck. They lock from the top of the tuner and not from the back side like most locking tuners. But they are super nice looking tuners. I paid more for these than other tuners that I buy. So I can only hope there are worth the money.
Now I have to wait on the weather before I can do more to my 2 builds. I'll have to see how it goes.

Are they Gotoh Tuners Eddie? I used locking Gotohs on a Tele that are constructed to look like Klusons from a distance, and they have locks on the top.

Here is the peg head with the veneer I made for it.
It'd been raining super hard all night and most of the morning. My patio is wet form the rain. Glad I remembered to cover things up. I still need to make some king of truss rod cover for this build. I also need to do some finial sanding on the peg head. But, it's all going to wait on the weather. I was wanting to get the routing done on this today. But that's not happening.

Thanks Eddie. They look like they have the same locking system as mine, but mine look like Fender type Klusons on the rear. I have them on my gold coloured Tele. I have never changed the strings on that guitar, although from memory you just crank the winding knob to lock and commence tune up simultaneously. I couldn't see how they are released. Maybe with a screwdriver or a coin in that slot once the tension is backed off? Says a lot for the round cored "Newtone" strings that they still sound excellent a good four years on, and it is one of the guitars that does actually see some action!
A nuisance about the rain and storms. It's difficult to visualise the kinds of weather you seem to get because from so far away it sounds like a hot dry environment? The peghead veneer is kinda cool Eddie. Nice work with that.

PRS has locking tuners that have the top lock with a slot.
