I know some of you at least know of Rick Beato. In this video he gets through a pretty objective resumé of PAFs, P90s and mini hummers. I can obviously hear differences, but I'm unconvinced that such distinctions are hardly worth getting worked up over. If I was forced to make a hypothetical chouce then I preferred the mini hummers TBH. My Firebird has what look like mini hummers and they sound great to me, although I'm aware that they are structurally different from mini hummers. I really like P90s too and the "plain" PAF types would be at the bottom of my list, but still I reckon that it's not that significant. Quality of construction is where my dollars would go and if I was going to change anything on my herd, I'd go for either John's or if the import duties and carriage were too injurious probably Bare Knuckle. youtu.be/MIVqTsGdpzMe&oe ...

I am subbed and watch a lot of Beato's videos. I don't remember seeing this one so I'll check it out.
I enjoy the differences between the types of pickups. But I would say without hesitation that P-90s are my favorites. As SCs go I really like the #2 position on Strats but the the neck on my mine is very nice indeed. I just keep whacking the switch and putting it in#4 and loosing myself in the mix. Yes I realize P-90s are single coils but when I say SCs I'm thinking skinny pups. I did recently get two sets of hummers (from John) kind of straight up PAFs for a couple builds I have in the works, Greenie being one and the other is coming up after all the other stuff is over.

I like the P90 sound too Dane, although TBH my experience is based upon just the one 1970s Gibson example in my double cut. I think there's just that bit more top end with a P90 which is absent in a hummer.
Interesting that a hummer with a coil split switch engaged does not sound at all like a single coil.
My Firebird pick ups have ceramic magnets and yet despite what the AlNiCo aficionados say it sounds great and certainly not worth swapping out. A can of worms ...

Another signature instrument ...
Nice to read that he's intending to donate any proceeds to a musical charity to be confirmed. A decent chap is our Rick. I do like /prefer the LP double cut, but I'd go for a single pickup. I've always held that one sympathetically located top drawer pickup is probably a better choice than two off the shelf jobs.
Well spotted John.

Rick has a really great presence on camera. I watched a video he did on the great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass, and it was really great.
So many videos, so little time!

And on a fretless bass too? Out of this and probably any sentient world? Truly humans have every right to claim The World.

First let me be very clear, these pickups are out of my price range. I realize that may come as surprise to some of you. I'm not part of that very specific clientele mentioned in the article. I am very happy with my current pickup manufacturer. I have this theory, I've mentioned it before, on this board I think as well as elsewhere. At the end of the 50s Gibson ceased to make Les Pauls. When they geared up to continue production as Norlin it was in a completely different location without any of the old equipment or jigs or fixtures. And probably none of the original builders. My contention is that the Gibson Les Paul guitars are just as much copies of the 50s guitars as any other factory making this style guitar. anywhere in the world. Short of having the legal right to put Gibson label on them. This might rile some folks. Just throwing it out there to see what you all think or feel about this. As for the new (old) pickup offering from Gibson I'm sure others have already done very much the same study and reverse engineering and have very good copies of their own.

Once again, buy what you can afford. Play what sounds good to you. Play a guitar that feels good, sounds good and looks good to you. The heck with everything else!
I have blessed in my life to have played on all kinds of guitars and amps. Not too often do I find one I don't like. With a little of this, that or another thing, I can make a guitar sound and play pretty good.
I, all to often, see videos and people commenting on this subject a lot. But really it all comes down to "How does it sound in the real world"? I have had a lot of guitars that don't cut it when playing in a band but sound great in a standalone environment. And some guitars come alive in a live band setting. They are not all the good by themselves.
So again it really comes down to what you like. Not what others like, but what you like! I like Old Fords with Chevy engines. LOL!
I like all kinds of pickups! My favorite at this point in time are also P90s. But I also like a humbucker that can be split.

But I can't say it on here! HA! That's a thing, I never did it but it's cool. I had a 58 Olds rear end in my 30 model A. Thing was almost bullet proof. I did snap an axle once. 456 gear.
