Mission accomplished with bone dust and CA guys! I didn't have any of the really thin CA, but it seems to have done the trick. I took your advice John regarding the masking tape. I used pressure sensitive and smoothed it down forcefully. I'm still unclear as to whether it is a plastic or bone nut but it's doing the job right enough. For all that folks go on about bone nuts, it can only really have any impact on the sound of the open strings, and they generally ring out nicely compared to fretted notes anyway. I'd still go for bone any day, but I suspect that there's a little bit of that "emperor's new suit of clothes" going on. Heresy I know but it has to be said.
I know what you're "driving at" with that tailfin analogy John because I like the Firebird for pretty much the same reason. I read that the designer Ray Dietrich was a retired automobile designer so it's no surprise is it? It's just that for me the Explorer seems too excessive. I can't contemplate multi-neck guitars for much the same reason. Hell each to his own I guess. I have discovered that my tastes have changed over time. When I was that young buck that salivated over Strats- 335s and Teles didn't do it for me at all. I've gone the other way now and have certainly opened up to the Gibson vibe.
There's definitely something going on with those mini humbuckers. Someone told me that the earliest Firebird pups had some nasty materials used in their assembly. I wonder what that could have been?

Just a follow-up to a previous throwaway comment that I made; If you use tapering springs, you can tease the end with the larger diameter away from the way you want to tilt the pickup and it will "settle" in a better position. That is to say you arrange for the screw threads to contact one side of the conical spring from top to bottom leaving the tilt in a favourable position.
This is definitely a case of "Your Mileage May Vary". I have had a modicum of success, although I confess I happened upon it by accident, and subsequently spent some time wondering why the previously recalcitrant critter was all of a sudden compliant.
I accept that I may be misled here, but it's the only explanation that I've been able to come up with.
