All - I have been working on a Strat-based Coodercaster clone and I was having trouble finding an economical Gold Foil pickup alternative that actually sounds like an old 60s Teisco Gold Foil pickup. After a lot of work and printing with my 3D printer, it is alive! It does sound good, and will be a good addition to my Coodercaster. Here is a photo of it in my plywood Rogue test guitar. I also did a short video at the shop to share. Thanks, and more to follow on this project. John

It sounds awesome John. Of course with you playing it could be a toilet seat with strings and it would sound amazing. It also looks really cool so now I need to build another guitar just for those pups. Is that a stock a humbucker sized pup?

I narrowly missed one of John's P90s because I had just sat out an interminable eight weeks wait for a late 1960s Gibson one that came from Canada. I'm up for a Gold Foil but displaying my ignorance I must ask whether there will be much timber to be removed? I can do that of course, but I need the scratchplate to hide my hacking because as I'm always ready to admit- finesse with wood is not my forte!

Steve, it will depend on what pick up the guitar already has and what kind of guitar. For instance if it's a Strat with a swimming pool route your home free with a change of pick guards. You may have noticed I asked if it were a stock humbucker sized pup in my post so until we know that for sure we won't know what you need to do to suit your guitar. What kind of guitar and pick up do you have?

Hi Dane. I believe it's a "Mighty Mite" ash body sprayed "Ry Cooder Blue". When I bought it back sometime around 1979-1980, it was an unfinished hard tail with standard Fender pup routs, but upon my request the shop routed it for vibrato bridge. In for a penny, I asked whether he would also rout for a Tele bridge pup and he made a superb job of both modifications. So it's my nod to Lowell George. It follows that the neck pup is a standard Leo rout and not one of these new fangled bath tub wig-outs!
I cannot discern a jot of difference between a "Strat" and my Tele loaded S-type. Theorists may decline to concur.
Some time ago, I had a Red Rhodes "Velvet Hammer" in the middle and a Seymour Duncan "Quarter Pounder" at the neck (now both in storage!) This was replaced with two vanilla Fender (probably Mexican) pups. I don't remember why I did that... It's crying out for a Gold Foil. It's also one of the two S-types that I wired with the "Mike Richardson" circuit that I was requested to make sound samples of by John. Sigh...

The pickup is very thin - about .35" (approx. 9mm) top to bottom, and the base is 3.37"L x 1.22" W (85.5mm x 31mm). It is about the size of a P-90 but much thinner. John

I remember the Velvet Hammer ads in the music magazines but I never played one. The Gold Foils are pretty cool - more info to follow. John

Thanks for the size info John.
Steve, with the P-90ish size of the Gold Foil your guitar will definitely need some router work. But as you mentioned early on the pick guard will hide any rough wood work. Sounds fun

Still working on the Coodercaster....taking way more time than I expected! I guess I “mis-estimated” the time required for this build on the low side.
Have any of you experienced this?

I would have to plunge rout it out which would imply making a template. I couldn't live with the knowledge of brutal hacking despite being hidden. You guys do great things with chisels. Not me! Oh well.
Another one on my list is a Charlie Christian...Not too many of those available. I think Jason Lollar does a CC, and there's someone over here in The UK that makes a number of options on the CC theme. Well he used to but if the market's not there he may have discontinued.

John A, yeah John, all to often. When I was doing home remodeling my wife used to say "figure out how long you (think) it will take, and double it."

I got the Coodercaster together...still working through some glitches. Photos next week...I am very happy with the way the pickups sound together.
I guess that is the payoff -- actually getting to play your creation! IT'S ALIVE!

Very cool John, looking forward to pics and sounds. "it's alive" man, getting the strings on a guitar that came out a pile of boards for the first time. Wow, nothing like it.
