All - I've been working on a "string though" pickup for playing slide for a while. I finally installed one on a guy's Strat last week, and he was pretty happy with it. You can't buy "kits" for these pickups - I had to find fabricators for each piece and had to find a magnet manufacturer willing to do short runs. Logistically it was really tough and frustrating. The result is pretty cool -- lots of work and we'll see how many this guy actually wants! John

This is really excellent John. Any plans to extend the scope of production to any degree and of course the likely price? I do appreciate that there would be economies of scale. Marketed in the right areas and with sounds matching expectations, you could have a niche market winner with this one.

Can we get a sound video of it? Interesting... EB

Looks a lot like that Supro you rewound for me. But I bet it's got a lot more output. Cool, too, that it adds a place to rest your picking hand.

I'm going to do a video. I have been so busy lately I can't find the time to make videos!
Dane, the pickup has more output because I had some custom magnets made for it. It is a great sounding pickup and really sounds like an old lap steel pickup. I recently got a set of original magnets and mine are about as close as you'll find. As far as selling them far and wide, I am probably going to use them for custom installs for the near future. I want to make sure my "supply chain" is dependable before I start making promises!

I feel a Coodercaster project or conversion coming on! e&oe...I believe you are correct. I have a tired MIM Strat that could use an update. I do need to get my slide chops up! John

You'll open the floodgates John. There's a fair few folk that would also be open to the idea of a frying pan horseshoe type pup. In fact you could argue that it would be a travesty to rob a Rickenbacher of its pickup so it's open season in that example.
I ~think~ Lollar do a string through pup, but I'm not aware of any others although I guess some are out there?

Yes, it would be a travesty. The reason I went through the trouble of building my own "string thru" is that the few commercial ones I tried did not sound like an old one. They sounded like a Strat pickup jammed in a chrome-plated case. The screws were wrong, the bobbin cover was wrong, the specs were wrong, and I particularly hated the wiring. Under the heading of "I couldn't leave well-enough alone", I set out to build something that actually sounded like what would have been on Ry Cooder's original Strat. More to follow on this...trying to do a short video this weekend. John

I finally got the right screws for the pickup and I'm building two new ones right now. They are taking longer to build that I would like.
And Eddie -- watch out for the hurricane.

I just looked this again and I think I should build a couple of lap steels. These pups would be perfect. I have access to the old Airline or Supro style ones so getting measurements would be easy. Although with a slightly Tele vibe would be very cool.
Anyway this would down the road a fair piece.

I think I'm going to make a lap steel, too. I found an old late-50s Airline lap steel on Reverb that featured this exact pickup.
I started playing lap steel a couple of years ago when I joined my current band. I thought it would be easy, and it turned out to be much harder than I ever imagined!
Alas, yet another project!
