Thanks for that -- Here is a shot of that belt buckle: goo.gl/images/UsvjjPI think it was to balance output, too. Recall that the players in the 40s and 50s played strings closer to barbed wire than what we play today! Everybody was playing a wound third string. Also recall that the early 1954 Strats had magnets that were flush with the cover like a Tele, and they soon got a "stagger" to even out the response. More to follow... John

I've gone the other way now. I prefer heavier sets with wound thirds on my electrics. That came about through dissatisfaction with regular strings on my Sweet16 so I threw on a set of D'Addario coated 12s and it immediately worked on that guitar despite that they are acoustic strings. Still I guess the Sweet16 is more of an acoustic instrument with a pickup? Since then I have moved the others over to wound third sets.
