My Traynor YGM-3 - my first amp and my current gigging amp - needed a new speaker. The stock Marsland speaker developed a nasty rattle. The replacement - A Warehouse Veteran 30 - is killer, but I needed to open the back. Here is the solution - a custom open-back baffle for the amp. Yes, it is killer...Tolex is on the way to cover it. I like the sound of open back... But in recent years I have found out, because I play in worship teams at church. I am liking the idea of closed back amps. Why??? Because If I face my amps toward me the open back is facing the sound man. Seems most of the sound people in the last years really pick on us guitar players about how loud we play.
I had two things that happened to me. One time I was told I was playing way too loud. As this person was going on at me I was swinging the guitar cable in my hand that I haven't even plugged in yet. I told the person, If my Srat is that loud un plugged Then maybe I should not play.
The other was just a few months ago. Again the sound person came up to me and was telling me I was play too loud. Hum... I said, I showed him I had the volume on "0" that there is no sound coming out of the amp. So I then turned my amp side ways, so that the sound of my guitar would go across the stage, and not out toward him. Never said anything to me again, until the next time I played... I had the amp toward him and all he did was go on at me, while the key boards (2 of them) were louder than the drums, our drummer play hard and loud.
so anyway... I am thinking of making a short wall to put behind my amp... I was think of closing in the amp, But I don't want the amp over heating as well. My amps, when I play are on 2 or 3 on the volume.. On one amp If I try and set it on one, then there is no dynamics at all...
Why is it sound people when they see an electric guitar more times than not they always pick on the guitar player, or they want to bury the guitar under the key boards?
Sorry I didn't mean to go off on this but it really bugs me... I have told more than one sound person If I'm too loud I don't have to play. I have been known to unplug at the amp and make it look like I am playing, just to see what happens. LOL! One time I had people come up to me and tell how good my guitars sounded. I have to laugh because I know they were not hearing me at all. Because I was not plugged in. I have seen this not just with me but other guitarist as well, with the same sound people. So I know it's not just me...HA!

Touchy sound guy, indeed!
I got the Tolex in and put it on the back. Hope to have some photos up soon. It turned out better than expected.
Chris, concerning that open back 4x12, I have a couple of old 80s Tube Works 2x12 cabs. They are built like 1/2 of a slant front Marshall 4x12. One has Vintage 30s and the other has GTM-75s in it. The top speaker has a removable back so you can have a half closed/half open sound. I think the cabinets sounds better with the back open -- half and half. Might be a good design study!

I have an old Marshall 4x12 I want to do something with. Sealed off bottom half, open top, hmmm.
Then again, I think someone is just going to inherent that project!

Nowadays I use combo amps with open backs. I trust the amp designer to decide how big the opening needs to be. {and I love having a space to stash cords, tuners, etc when I have to pack the amp around}
Back in the day I used to build bass reflex cabinets. takes some patience to tune the port and baffles but always got the sound and volume I wanted. Are you experimenting with different size baffles?
as an aside, last week the bass player told me I should turn up a bit. I can do that.

I experimented a little, but I settled on a design (opening) that was visually pleasing! In my journey I found that the closed cabinet didn't have the optimal dimensions. The "compartment" the speaker occupied was actually pretty small and very shallow.
I also noticed that a lot of the high-end and vintage combos have open backs. The 3rd Power amps made here in Tennessee have a triangle-shaped cutout!
The Warehouse Speaker sounds pretty good and will only get better as it breaks-in. I really like the open back -- more info to follow.
